Geodon and Parnate?????

Posted by Maxime on November 22, 2009, at 9:39:05

Can I take Geodon with Parnate?

I am looking for a mood stabiliser. I am BPII and not taking one. I am pretty sure that I went through a week of hypomania last week. This week it's better. I am so scared of other APs because they cause weight gain. I don't know what else to use with the Parnate. What about Trileptal? Would that mix okay with Parnate.

I haven't always been on a mood stabiliser. But I think that the Parnate & the Nortrip might be causing it. Today I am fine. Normal mood. Last week I was so high I was emailing my PDOC DAILY to tell him how good I was feeling. I guess he didn't catch on or think of hypomania.

I would really like my life to be simpler.

Thanks everyone.

Well I never caught on either. It must be nice to have a normal mood. I've forgotten what that is. As for the geodon of course I don't know. Love Phillipa

I'm sure that if you had seen me in person you would have suspected hypomania ... or drugs lol

Hi Maxie:
I'm so happy you posted how you're doing. I was about to post you! I figured you were doing well because your posts have been upbeat (not manic).

I have been wondering if one of the reasons you're doing so well is the nortriptyline? I think it is, with me, but then how would I know what it would be without it. I only take 25mg and I'm going to ask my pdoc if I can take 12.5mg because I'm sleeping too late in the morning. But I don't want to mess around with it very much because I feel closer to "normal" (whatever that is) than I have for years.

And the Provigil is a must for me, otherwise I'd just be too tired all the time. I hate taking a stimulant because I think it could poop out on me like dexedrine did. I don't increase it, so maybe I'll be OK. I stick to 100-200mg. period.

I think that's wonderful you feel so well, but yet you know you might need to augment Parnate a little more with a mood stabilizer. Augmenting Parnate properly seems to make the magic with it.

I don't know a thing about Geodon or any other stabilizers except that Lamictal made me unable to walk or use my arms properly. Like MS or something. Awful. We are all so different it is amazing!

I hope you can find something that doesn't dumb you down but helps you keep level. I love the clear headedness I've gotten on Parnate. I'm not bipolar but I can feel myself having some mood swings on Parnate. I'm wondering if it is my diet.

I'm so very happy you are doing well!!!! You deserve it!! You surely went through the agonies of the damned getting there!! Good for you having the guts and persistence to see it through!!! AND, foresee any potential problems!

Yay, yay to you, girl!!!

Love ya,
Gayle

There is a possibility that Geodon would produce serotonin syndrome when combined with Parnate. Geodon inhibits the reuptake of serotonin.

Thanks Gayle! I wonder if it's the Nortrip also. It was weird that I went hypomanic, then down to depressed for a few days and I now I am "normal". I would rather not take an extra med if I don't need it. I don't want to the Geodon for augmenting but for mood stabilisation. I have a BP type 2 diagnosis. Sometimes I need a mood stabiliser, sometimes I don't. It's weird.

Thanks again for your optimism.

Well I don't need that to happen! Sigh. If I do need a mood stabiliser there aren't many that don't cause weight gain. Geodon didn't make me gain. Do you think Trileptal would be good with Parnate, or would that be another "no no". I used trileptal in the past and it was good at stabilising my moods.

I think it's time I started working on a mood chart to plot my mood over the next couple of weeks.

Maxime (and Scott),

Would low dose Abilify work? (Like 1-2mgs?) Weight neutral. That's what I was given when first dx'd w/ BP nos. Maybe that dose would not be enough for BPII. It's pretty dang potent, though--and didn't mess up my thinking.

A mood chart is a great tool. I track my meds on it, too.

Good luck, Maxie, and while hypo is NOT good, I'm happy to hear you're still improving!

I forgot about the unavailability of Abilify in Canada.

Yes. I like the drug.

Thanks for the link Scott. I feel better knowing that I can go to Trileptal if I need a stabiliser. It helped me in the past and there was no weight gain.

It's available now. It's not covered by my government drug plan and being on Welfare would make it impossible to buy. Blah!

I took trileptal 150mg for a long time. No weight gain on that dose. How high did you go before? Love Phillipa

No side effects at all on 1200 mg of Trileptal. It was a good med for me. The only reason I stopped it was because I ended up in the hospital and the psychiatrist there took me off it and put me on Seroquel. Idiot doctor! That's how I gained 40 pounds. It was the same hospitalization where she stopped my clonazepam cold turkey and I was on 4 mg of the stuff. Not impressed. Sorry for rambling ...

Hi Maxine,
I don't know if you can mix it with Parnate but have you ever tried lamictal? It causes me terrible agitation and miserable anxiety BUT my sister takes it and swears its the med that pulled everything together for her.
Just a thought.

Maxime,

You have a concise way of rambling :-D

How have you been?

Thanks for asking. I am doing well. I sleep with the help of Loxapine. And adding the Nortriptyline to the Parnate was a great idea. I have improved in the past week or so. I think that this be as good as I get and I am fine with that.

Thanks for the suggestion but Lamictal makes me depressed for some reason. I had high hopes for the med when I tried it a few years ago.

Hi, yes I could take it again if needed. I got over my hypomanic episode and now I feel normal. I am scared to tell my pdoc about it because he might want to lower the Parnate. I would prefer to add Trileptal than lower my Parnate. Even though I am Bipolar Type 2 I am not always on a mood stabiliser. I would prefer not take the trileptal in case in dulls my good mood. I can't go back to being depressed.
