Anyone try Intuniv yet?

Posted by TriedEveryDrug on November 7, 2009, at 0:08:49

According to Shire it is available now.

I'm seeing my doc monday... I will most likely be getting a prescription for it (we've talked about it for months)

Just curious if anyone had tried it yet. :)

Best regards.

α2A norepinephrine agonist that supposedly "improves attention abilities via modulating post-synaptic α-2a receptors in the prefrontal cortex"

It is an XR version of the drug guanfacine.

It's for ADHD isn't it?

No, but I'm curious. Read the Wiki link (thank you). Please let us know how it goes. May I ask what you are being treated for? ADHD?

good luck,

Took first dose today...

Yeah, this is for ADD, inattentive-type.

First half of the morning it made me more cheerful. The rest of the day it made me miserably depressed!!

(I see depression is a side of guanfacine - great)

I think I am a little more focused and social, though.

Too early to tell. This side-effect may be a deal breaker though.

Yes, that is quite a side effect. I wonder if you can take in two doses?

let us know how you're doing,

Thanks for sharing your experience... keep us updated. I'm headed to the doctor on Friday. I'd like to try a combo of Adderall or Vyvanse with a low dose of Intuniv and a low dose of Zoloft(25mg) to offset any depression. I'm ADD combined type.

day 6...

I have been ramping up from 1mg to 3mg. The max peds dose is 4mg, I calculate that in mg/kg, that would be closer to 11mg for adults, according to their mg/kg specifications on the prescribing sheet.

anyhoo... I think this stuff is making me (more) depressed. I feel a bit confused sometimes, and anxious over things I don't get anxious about. Also quick to anger on this stuff (NRIs have this affect on me as well). I get very drowsy sometimes, too.

Not seeing a whole lot of attentional benefit. Maybe a little.

I don't know how long you're supposed to take this to see beneficial results.

I wonder if you have to wait 4-6 weeks like with an antidepressant? I'm sorry that it's not helping you more.

Hey there, thanks for the update--I had hoped for better news. Sorry. If I have time tonight, I'll google your med. I started an add-on of Strattera, which my pdoc told me to take at night because of drowsiness...(?). The jury is still out on this one.

I would think by day 6 something more positive rater than negative would be showing up. Any calls out to your doc?

Well a very quick google did not reveal any information about intuit on adults--only children. Kid's brains are sooo different.

just an observation,

So there was nothing in the prescribing info pdf about when the stuff should work. but I found this on intunive.com:

"In 2 clinical studies with INTUNIV lasting 8 and 9 weeks, ADHD symptoms started to improve within
2 weeks. For most patients, symptom improvement continued over the course of the studies."

So I guess I should not write it off yet...

BTW, when I took strattera, my doc suggested taking it at night for the first 2 or 3 days then switching to morning, because once it is in your system, it can keep you up at night...

Good luck!

O.K. so I'm officially hogging the thread. Strattera takes at least two weeks to show it's effects, sometimes longer--so I imagine your med may have a similar time table.

Best

I think this drug is better in conjunction with a stimulant... are you on one? Also, I don't think I would want to take any more than 2mg personally.

I took this from Rxlist:

"The recommended initial dose of guanfacine (as the hydrochloride) when given alone or in combination with another antihypertensive drug is 1 mg daily given at bedtime to minimize somnolence. If after 3 to 4 weeks of therapy, 1 mg does not give a satisfactory result, a dose of 2 mg may be given, although most of the effect of guanfacine is seen at 1 mg (see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY). Higher daily doses have been used, but adverse reactions increase significantly with doses above 3 mg/day."

The above paragraph is talking about Tenex(guanfacine immediate release) for blood pressure but still, they say the most effective dose is 1mg and no more than 2 is typically used. I'm just guessing, but I would think that would be similar to 2-4mg of Intuniv with 2mg possibly being more effective.

I think the higher you go on your dosage, the sleepier/weaker you're going to get plus the depression... I myself got depression from Propranolol. You don't want to block all of your adrenaline.

As far as kicking in, I'm not a doctor but i don't think it's one of those meds that take awhile to kick in. I think it's something you notice effects on right away, though they can build more over time.

Thanks... I have a bunch of adderall and Focalin kicking around, so I may try one of those with this tomorrow.

Can't hurt, though Adderall seems to make my add worse.

vee shall see...

Please don't post under more than one name at the same time.

But please don't take this personally, either, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person, and I'm sorry if this hurts you.
