I think I'm manic...Help!

Posted by Phidippus on November 8, 2009, at 22:53:18

Two days ago I flew into a rage. The last couple of days my thoughts have been racing madly, quickly alternating with depressive swings. Day is madness for me and night I seem to end up in a lull. Should I up my Lithium, Geodon or both? And could the Lexapro be causing my mixed state?

P

Dexedrine 30 mg
Keppra 1000 mg
Lithium 900 mg
Geodon 80 mg
Lexapro 20 mg
Memantine 10 mg

Well wishes.

Sorry to hear that.
What was the last change you made to your regime? That may help at least find the reason...

It could be from the Lexapro, that would be my guess. I would call your doctor ASAP before it gets out of control.

Which drug did you add to your treatment regime most recently?

For what reason did you add Geodon?

Although it is uncommon, people can become manic on some of the atypical antipsychotics, particularly Zyprexa. Geodon is the most antidepressant-like of this class of drugs, and is known to be a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Perhaps it is contributing to your mania. The more conservative option is to discontinue the Lexapro and check your lithium level. However, this might leave you depressed.

Lexapro is new as is the Keppra, but I'd taken KEppra before and it had anti-manic effects.

The logically speaking Lexapro may well be the culptit. Your dose isn't all that small so it could make you high (if you are prone to that).
Geodon too can also give you a high ( I second Scott on this) Initially it gave me a high but that was only right at the beginning- (first 2 weeks)
Didn't you mention somewhere that the kreppa was making you a bit high (or am I imagining that one- not sure)
When can you see your pdoc next? Or speak to him/her about what to add or if to reduce the dose of the Lexapro (if he/she feels that is the cause). Lowering the dose of Geodon can actually make you more high so you may have to increase that instead.
You really need your pdocs input- you are on so many drugs, it could be anything.
Do keep us updated and hope you feel better
Love

I adjusted my Lithium to 1200 mg and Keppra to 1500 mg. I backed down on the Geodon to 60 mg.

I'm glad you are feeling better. It takes a great deal of insight to recognize mania when it emerges.

Good luck.

That's great news!! Did the pdoc advise you on this at all or did you have to figure it out yourself? just wondering.....

That's very good to hear. Most people don't recognize that they are going manic until it's too late. You were wise to make the changes.
