A thought on Lyrica and benzos....

Posted by jms600 on August 30, 2009, at 12:29:14

This is just a thought, but if benzos aren't helping my anxiety does Lyrica/pregabalin stand any chance? Surely they work on the same part of the brain and hence if benzos don't relieve the anxiety then neither will Lyrica??

Am I correct or completely wrong?!?

I found klonopin and gabapentin, the early cousin of lyrcia, the cheaper one,to all most have a synergy.

Most stablizers have a end result of simply making more gaba available in the nogon, more gaba benifits benzos to work more potently.

So in short,i will say this, yess i agree replacment of a benzo with a stablizer is less likly in most cases to cease anxiety, the two alone how might possably hold a nice synergy one that can stop anxiety dead in its tracks.

For myself i found this to be klonopin and gabpentin, lyrcia is a hyped up cousin more expensive and overly potent in my view.

Let me make clear "i feel stablizers alone will less likly produce anxiety relieaf then a benzo,HOWEVER the two in combo can often creat a synergy the stablizer acting like a gaba pillo to make the benzo more stable and potent,i found this true of the klonopin/gabpentin combo"thanks.

Hi jms!

I was also very interested in Lyrica and from what I've read, Lyrica doesn't work "at the same site" as Benzos nor does it mimic gaba. And it doesn't just only increase gaba levels either.. it does a lot of other things.. so it could work I think.

Good luck to you!!

The article clearly is not a fan of benzos. Not to say lyrcia is one of the newer and most potent meds out there and the posability of anxiety relieaf alone does stand,it still remains uncommon that a mood stablizer over a benzo will hold greater anxiety relieaf

Also you emailed me then used it aganist me before, now you start this post using my real name, not that i even mind that but perhaps it best you avoid my posts, isnt it uncivil to use a posters real name or why then do we even have posting handles.

That's a real good synopsis. I don't know all of the things that Lyrica does. I do know that it binds to the alpha2delta subunit of the voltage-gated calcium channel and inhibits it. Neurontin does the same thing. To my knowledge, neither drug influences sodium channel function.

My brain does not like either of these two drugs. They make my depression worse and make me feel like a zombie. What's worse, is that I continue to experience these things long after I discontinue the drugs.
