Equetro anyone?

Posted by SheilaC on August 26, 2009, at 13:25:47

I have never heard of this drug that my doc mentioned to me, but after looking on the bottle it says extended release carbamazepine (Tegrotol)?

Does anyone use Equetro or Tegrotol as a mood stabilizer? How much? Does it keep you from getting too low?

I'd be interested in your experiences. I've never taken this before.

Do you combine it with any other drugs?

Hi Ron, thanks for the posts.

The last time I tried Lamictial was just 5mg (maybe even 2.5mg) and after a couple of days I was fevered, my face was bright red and hot and my gums started feeling funny again (this was the 3rd or 4th time I'd tried it), so I was told to stop it right away.

I had used Trileptal in the past and the only issue I had with it was that it messed up my periods - which is a real pain. I had a total hysterectomy, so I don't have to worry about that anymore, but I do take estrogen.

I'm wondering if my Pdoc wants me to try Equetro because maybe it doesn't mess with my hormones the way Trileptal does? Don't know.

I have resisted mood stabilizers for years because I didn't want to gain weight. But my reg doc and husband are encouraging me to try a small dose mood stabilizer.

Hi Phillipa, I have no idea, Depkote didn't do that, just Trileptal. Now that I a in menopause, and take HRT, maybe I won't have that problem with this extended release version of Tegretol. We'll see. I think I'll try it at least.

Phillipa, yes, depending on where my estrogen level is my anxiety and depression and awful insomnia can be bad. I try to keep my estrogen level up and those problems are easier to manage. When my estrogen level gets low I feel terrible physically and mentally.

Since January I've been getting estradiol pellet inserts and I really like them. They last about 3 months. I can tell when I get low and I supplement with oral estradiol pills or a patch until I can get another pellet insert.

Sheila when going through menopause couldn't handle synthetic hormones so used biest cream. No hormone testing at the time standard dose could handle that. Now post menopausal saw an antiaging doc and he did hormone testing now cream containg, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone. Compounded cream. But may go off as not doing anything aware of still have wrinkles and from thyroid hair fall and got bruises never have before, and could be causing weight gain and more anxiety. I am on the fence. If you google Stanley's Parmacy in Charlotte NC they explain a lot and list the docs that prescribe in this area. Phillipa
