Photosensitivity

Posted by maxime on August 14, 2009, at 19:47:55

OMG, I had the worst reaction a week ago whilst spending some time in the sun. My skin became so itchy and prickly and red that it was hurting me so much. I had sunscreen on but it didn't seem to help.

I found out that the thorazine I take can cause photosensitivity. I know the obvious thing to do is to avoid the sun. But I am going to be spending some time on the beach this weekend and I am really scared about what will happen. I have a 60 SPF sunscreen to use and lots of aloe.

It was the worst sensation ever and the only thing that helped to relieve it was cold showers.

Has anyone else ever experienced this?

The beach is in Vermont ... by a lake.

Vermont Is so nice. Hope you have a wonderful time. I guess long sleeves and hat. You really do need to be protected. Get a wetsuit to swim. And that sunscreen. Love Phillipa maybe it will be just cloudy?

Maybe try a stronger sunscreen, lots of it and reapply frequently. Hope you find something to stop the itchies..sucks to try to have a relaxing time with a itchy rash..take care!

Well believe it or not there was just an episode of Royal Pains which involved Largactil (Thorazine)... it is possible for your skin to turn blue even.

I would stay out of bright sun, and if you have to go to the beach, definitely use sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater (there really isn't a definition beyond 30 or so but whatever is highest couldn't hurt). Not beachwear, but I wouldn't... well.. wear beachwear.

Its an unfortunate reaction with this medication for some people. If you have to keep taking it, keeping away from bright sunlight would now seem prudent, or if it becomes impossible to manage, I'd try a different medication, it is one of the oldest (yes, still used).

It's going to be 98 degrees tomorrow and sunny ... that's why we are going to the beach. I will pack a long sleeve shirt and maybe even wear it in the water. I spend a lot of time in the water and that's the worst way to get burnt!

I just want to be be normal. :(

The drive is two hours. I've packed sunscreen, aloe, long sleeve shirt, beach coverup and of course my bathing suit. I hope it will be okay. We are having a heat wave right now.

I understand that feeling... but there is no such thing as "normal" because if everyone was that, they'd be the same and that isn't true.

I assume you've arrived at this medication because it works the best? It is a very old AP?

Thorazine is the best antipsychotic for me and I use it as my mood stabiliser. I don't have much luck with antipsychotics because they usually make me lactate and for some reason Thorazine doesn't. It is the oldest AP out there ....

I am back from the beach with burnt ears and lips, but the rest of me is fine. I didn't think to put sunscreen on my ears. :) I did have to reapply the suncreen several time throughout and the day and I am still pinky looking but not in pain. Thank goodness!

That's good was thinking seriously where are beaches in Vermont as New Hampshire borders the Atlantic. Remember our geography lesson a long time ago? My mostest favorite study!!!!! Glad your're okay. Did you have a laptop with you? I wish could use one but would need glasses. I wonder if they make one with large print? Love Phillipa

I was on a very sandy beach by a very massive lake, Lake Champlain.

No, I didn't have my laptop with me. That would have ruined the day! You could always change the display settings on a laptop to have large print if you needed to.

Maxie thanks you've always been so good at geography. And thanks for the heads up on the print sizes. I will have to see if Greg's gets bigger. No the laptop would definitely ruined what was a fun time. Love Phillipa

Hey I got it from doxy twice, once in Thailand, very badly and I was working outside, so I just had to cover up which was horrid because it was during the build up to monsoon season which is very uncomfortable, around 40c (104f) and +90% humidity. The best thing I can advise is to get a massive hat and swim in long sleeve's, like a lot of us southern aussies do. No one looks twice at you here for doing that, and stuff them if they they do. I've just started lamictal and found out it can do the same. If it does, I'll have to drop it, because working in long sleeves is impossible here during summer.

It didn't make a difference for me how strong the sunscreen was either! My sister swam in a caftan, LOL
