Im a hardcore workout person,i lift over 300 and i have been into the whole workout scene i.e the nuterients invovled, amino acids etc and i can tell you it doesent help me,in fact excersise spikes a huge rush of adrenaline so i take my meds after or before a workout.

One should however stay in shape for too many reasons to count.Main one being as my father said about me after seeing me maced and dragged out by police,"man your body is strong to have gone through what you do".However its no cure unfotuntly i believe.

When I was bodybuilding, exercise had no positive effect on my mood whatsoever. Perhaps exercise is more apt to help someone with unipolar depression than bipolar depression. I really don't know.

My bro is BP I and I've seen him w/ and w/out exercise. Well, exercise is no cure, but it helps him immensely--he lifts weights & runs up to ten miles. He's much worse, more symptomatic (depressed, mixed) w/out it.

I'm bipolar and exercise was a must for years. It was the only thing that made me feel normal, other than feeling a strong connection with a woman. The only reason why I'm not benefiting from it now is because I wrecked my body and exercise turned into physical therapy. I am also experiencing issues with my brain that I am having a hard time explaining. It has also been harder and harder to experience such relief after my first major mixed episode that sent me into the hospital. Since than I have not consistently been on medications that have really helped me. I also have not stopped stressing out about a few of the things that contributed to my hospitalization.

I find that the better your meds are working for you, the more likely you will find relief from exercise.

Weight training is good, but if it is not followed by intense cardio, it will not help much by itself. When doing cardio training it is important to get in that zone where you are almost meditating. Sometimes even shutting your eyes can help, unless you are running on the treadmill of course.

When you do cardio, you want to do just enough to exhaust that negative energy and gain positive energy at the same time. You might jump from the treadmill to the bike, or the bike to the treadmill, just to mix things up. If you belong to a gym like Gold's, you should check out some of the spinning classes. Whatever you do, make sure you stretch for at least 10 or 15 minutes after your workout as stretching has been shown to increase levels of GABA.

Hi Morgan,

Thanks for posting that site on bipolar care--It's very informative. I have some kind of bp nos, ultra rapid cycling--to hell and back all in a day. My bro and another sib have BP I, a different animal to be sure. I'm sorry to hear about your health difficulties--I saw you other post about ms. I hope that turns out to be stress induced. I recently had a battery of autoimmune blood tests to figure out why I wasn't able to get out of bed for almost two months after a flu. They came back negative. Good, but no answer for mysterious fatigue. I think Phillipa asked you to list your symptoms when your up to it. I'll follow your posts. Good luck.

Yeah I'm not the same person I was just a few years ago. I really do believe that medications plus depression/anxiety can do a number on some people(and then there is the physical). Also, I have been put under general anesthesia 4 times in the past year. I just don't trust the overall safety of general anesthesia given several times in a fairly short period. Again, for most it may not be an issue, but for a few it may be harmful. I mean, I hallucinated on nitrous oxide at the dentist office when I was like 8 years old. I saw 3 of the dentist and 3 of his assistant. I freaked out and threw my arms and elbows all over the place.

Had general anesthesia two years ago this winter and have not also been the same. O2 sats were in the 80's and I'd quit breathing if tried to sleep in recovery room. My back has killed since then and anxiety higher? I questioned the staff on damage from low 02sats as was a nurse myself and was told no problem. Hah!!!!! Phillipa ps since then excercise is harder for me also.
