Abilify and weight

Posted by tgo on May 29, 2009, at 18:10:36

So far I have gained 50 lbs since starting abilify. Will the weight gain taper off or does it just keep putting on the pounds???

That's a lot of weight gain. Abilify does cause weight gain in some people (though I was on it for months and eat like crap and it didn't affect me), but 50 lbs is probably well beyond the norm. I would get an appointment with your doctor to see if Abilify is for you, maybe get a sugar workup.

It probably will continue to do whatever it is doing to your system to slow metabolism or increase hunger just like some other atypicals.

I have a rather substantial weight gain from Seroquel, which I need.

Its not anybody's fault -- but simple things like attempting to cut down on food (which is -really- hard, I know) and get some simple exercise, walking, jogging, etc, will at least keep it at bay if not reverse it some.

Having fasting glucose tests is always a good thing, but diabetes does not necessarily follow weight gain and vice versa. Every 3-6 months or so should be plenty.

Geez--the higher my abilify was pushed, the more and more I ate. For me, abilify was not weight neutral. I'm glad I'm off--for additional reasons. Not the right drug for me.

I haven't heard anything about Abilify having adverse effects on thyroid function.

I am about 40 pounds overweight. I blamed it all on Nardil and nortriptyline. When I stopped taking both of those drugs, I could not lose the weight that I had gained. I have been taking Abilify 20mg for the entire time. Through correspondences and witnessing people here who take Abilify, weight gain seems to be latent and gradual. It is insidious with this drug, and not the obvious rush of weight gain that you see with drugs like Zyprexa. In my estimation, Abilify is not weight neutral, especially if it is taken beyond a few months.

Of course, I am not happy about to have to report this. I think the only truly weight neutral atypical antidepressant is Geodon (ziprasidone). Of the older atypicals, I believe Stalazine (trifluoperazine) is weight neutral.

Phillipa,

My thyroid stated acting up about the same time I took abilify. I can't remember exactly which happened first.

I didn't gain weight on abilify. I ate a lot but that was because it seemed to lower blood sugar in me, a lot.

I got diabetes on geodon. Its starting to seem to me that zyprexa is one of the safer new AP's.

ya! Thyroid. I never thought anything of it since everyone else in imediate family has a thyroid problem. I was the last one to get it though. Do you think there is some thing about abilify and thyroid?

Zyprexa have you been tested and others in family for hasimotos the autoimmune thyroid disease. Very common. Thyroid if low tends to lead to weight gain and also seems to make mental illness harder to treat. I've seen this and my pdoc confirmed it. Phillipa
