Seriously, no soups on maoi's?

Posted by Cseagraves on April 26, 2009, at 15:47:22

Am starting Nardil now and was looking at the diet restrictions which I really have no problems with except soups.

My anxieties have been so bad for so long, soup is the one of the few ways I can get food down. What ingredient (besides MSG) are they worried about in soups? Does anyone else here taking maoi's have a problem with soups?

If I remember correctly, it's the yeast extract. It seems to be in everything canned or packaged. It was frustrating for me also. I think Campbell's tomato soup is yeast free. I'm sure I found a couple of frozen dinners that didn't list it as an ingredient but I can't remember the name.

Read labels and I hope you can find some soups!

I'm starting parnate soon so I'm also trying to figure out what to eat. I read that Hydrolized yeast, autolized yeast and others is a precursor of MSG and its a sneaky way to get MSG into foods. It and similar "food enhancers" are in everything. I like Morningstar vegetarian frozen foods and it is in every single one of them! Its in almost all soups and gravies, also. Very disappointing. I eat soup and I'm on Nardil

I have soup all the time on Nardil. Was never told not to, so never thought about it. The diet has never been a big concern of mine, except for cheeses and fermented foods which I don't like.
The only soup that might be a problem is something like miso, which is fermented, I think.

I think alot of the dietary restrictions are over blown but of course one can never be too careful with avoiding any reaction while on a MAO. I have taken them for years on and off, took Marplan twice,Parnate and now Nardil,a second time. First tried Nardil in the last 80's and it was miracle for me.

The biggest concern I have is taking medications that can interact with MAO's. Even my doctor prescibed a muscle relaxant that was contraindicated. I had told him I was on a MAO so he knew before he prescribed it.

Lots of error are made by docs since so many do not know about the MAO restrictions. You have to get a drug book to verify a med is safe to take with a MAO. Oh well, you can never be too sure with this stuff.

frozen entrees on MAOIs

When I took an MAOI I still ate pre-packaged food and was lax mainly around the yeast ingredients, and did fine. (I never did do a yeast spread like ?Marmite, which I hadn't heard of before seeing the warning to not consume it. Maybe that is a British product?)
I recall having at the time some Kashi frozen entrees, and I just now went to their website and looked at the ingredient list, and see that at least some of them are good with the MAOI diet. For the ones I looked at the ingredient list to, none of them listed yeast extract, for those of you being more cautious. Unfortunately, Kashi costs more than the common/mainstream frozen meals, and I am on the poorer side, so I can't get them often.
I had also wondered about the nacho Doritos and cheapo ramen noodle powder that includes dried soy sauce, but gingerly tried them out and was okay. I don't think I ever heard an official answer on if they are okay.
I no longer take the MAOI, so I don't have to woory now, but I really wonder about frozen palak paneer (aka saag paneer), one of my favorite dishes. On the more recent list of dietary guidance for MAOIs I had seen that mozarella was listed as okay, which is pretty much what got me though that time, still feeling like I could have some real cheese. I wonder if paneer is safe also? I think of it as pretty fresh and similar to mozarella (wishful thinking?).
I haven't confirmed this, but two other brands (similar to Kashi) that include frozen meals and may be less likely to include yeast extracts are Amy's and Ethnic Gourmet. (Sadly, they are also more costly than HealthyChoice/Stauffer's/Lean Cuisine/Marie Callender's/common ones where I live.)

Thanks,

O.K.

So has anyone ever had a reaction to foods that contain yeast extracts in them that is or has been on an maoi? I eat alot of soups and lean cuisines. I pretty much figure I'll have to give up my Morning Star veggie burgers and veggie chicken patties.

Thanks for any info.

My completely unscientific guess is that yeast extracts like Marmite, Bovril or Vegemite spread liberally on toast would be very dangerous, whereas the small amounts used as flavour enhancers in convenience foods probably wouldn't be much of an issue.

Pure guesswork on my part though!
