Did Adderall make you tired?

Posted by Garnet71 on March 27, 2009, at 19:49:22

What the hell is up with this stuff? It feels just like when I took the Ritalin, moreso at first. I took 1/4 tablet (of the 10 mg), felt a bit tired from it, took another 1/2, and got real tired. I compared Ritalin to Xanax at first, but the more I think it about it, the more it feels like it has the same stuff in it as allergy medicine--like, if I remember the name correctly, hydroxyzine-those little pink allergy pills.

I know it's only one dose, but why does it feel like that allergy medicine when I first take it?
It's putting me to sleep and that is not good.

I honestly don't know how much more of my life I can take. The more this goes on, the weaker of a person I think I am becoming. I can't handle any stressors any longer. I haven't even opened my bills in weeks because I can no longer pay any of them. I took out a loan from what was left of my 401k already last December, when I lost my health insurance. I have no safety net. I haven't been motivated enough to get the house ready to sell so I can stay in school, though I started moving stuff to a storage unit. I can't sell my car living in the suburbs now, and besides they told me it needs almost $2000 in work to get inspection and to fix the oil leak, and my son hit a guard rail and put a dent in the fender. One repair for inspection is $500 itself. I checked the oil yesterday in the engine--it was completely empty. I didn't check it for 10 days. I put 3 1/2 quarts in it. I am lucky the engine didn't seize up on me. I guess I have one good thing going for me, huh.

I just don't know how much more I can take. I thought this was my only hope. It's too soon to tell, but am getting anxious-type thoughts about not being able to handle my life if this doesn't work out.

I have definitely heard of this happening before. When I was on 20 mg xr, it would get me through my first 3 hour class (which is really why I needed it) and then I would be able to dose off on it. It's definitely strange how this works. It's not that it puts me to sleep right away, but I just get burned out after a while when it starts wearing off (after only a few hours). For what it's worth I am now on instant release instead of XR and I don't notice this problem as much. I use to be on Focalin which is chemically similar to ritalin and I really never noticed this problem. When i take adderall a midday nap is definitely a necesesity

Yeah, isn't that weird? Hey, you are not the first person to report getting tired on a stimulant though. It happens. If you think about it, it helps calm down overactive kids. What's up with that? Other people, it would send them through the roof.

I thought of the same thing when my doc mentioned he has success with Gabapentin in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. I thought Gabapentin was sleep inducing, relaxing, lethargic, anti-anxiety, stuff like that. But in some people, it perks them instead.

I think it all has to do with some complex interplay between our hormonal status, particularly cortisone, and the sensitivies of our receptors, specifically the NE and DA ones. Either oversensitive, or undersensitive, and thus reacting differently to a given stimulus.

The so-called paradoxical effect of stimulants observed in children is a dose-related phenomenon as opposed to a genuine paradoxical effect (which is why I wrote "so-called"). It's not paradoxical at all. If it were, there'd be an actual medical test to diagnose ADHD: a stimulant "challenge". Up the dose and they'll exhibit classical stimulant-induced behavior.
