Luvox advise

Posted by Relapse on February 27, 2009, at 18:24:56

I was wondering if anyone could help me on some information. When I had a relapse about 10 weeks ago, I ask my pdoc about Luvox. Doing my research I thought it would be a good fit for me. I have taken a lot of sri's over the last 14 years, but never Luvox. My trouble seems to be major gad and obsessive thoughts which leads me into depression. Then I battle all 3 at the same time. I am on 150mg of Zoloft, 600mg lithium and 200mg of Seroquel. While it is helping, and I know the higher dose of Zoloft is suppose to help with the obsessive thoughts, I was wondering if I would get more relief from its particular anxiety benefits. My doc said he does not like it due to "past problems". I was so messed up when I saw him, I really did not pin him down on that statement. I do know that it came under fire when they discovered one of the Columbine shooters was taking it. But any med can be linked to any event.
Thanks

No it had to do with a marketing problem. If you google you can probably find it. They also just released a long acting luvox l00mg and either 120 or 150mg. Been on it for years and did very well at first got to 250 of the regular felt good was also then on ativan with it. Two weeks later I think it pooped out in a way as never had that much energy or was a start up of a kind of hypomania. Now I'm still on it only med never had any side effects to and in the process of raising it again. And it did help my obsessive thoughts like adding license plate numbers and assigning a numberical number to the letters of the alphabet. And taking only a certain amount of sips of water. Why you on the lithium if might ask? Love Phillipa

Exactly. It had zero to do with the event. They could have been taking any of the SSRIs or none, or an AP, or anything. There were a lot more of socio-economic and other factors in the incident than anything else.

Luvox is a good medication for OCD, I have taken it, it was marketed that way but actually I think it is more than marketing. It is true that most of the "cleaner" SSRIs might equally help a given individual for obsessive thoughts.

If he meant "past problems" as in how you responded to medication personally, that's a different story, but the link to the event really led the manufacturer fleeing and it becoming generic.

I'd ask your doctor on this one, if he believes that, there's not a lot to do but I would be surprised unless either a) he really has had problems with patients or b) he doesn't have enough peer discussion about it.

But that's saying "I doubt your doctor" -- and that's not what I want to convey, I'm just curious I guess.

don't mean to be a downer, but just to weigh in from the other camp, i felt no OCD relief from Luvox. in fact, after 2 months of use, i found it difficult to get past the side-effects, which for me were just as bad - if not worse - than any other SSRI i've tried.

Phillipa,
Thanks for your help. My doc said the lithium was to augment the Zoloft - to help it work more effectively.
Thanks again

Time has passed since the event, probably, and the manufacturers want to make up for profit by extending the old patent.

As for its benefit, who knows if it is any different than the original.

How long and at what dose did you remain on it or go up to?

It can take a while for someone with an affective disorder to adjust to the side effects of a medication.

Just a thought
