Serzone and Trazodone?

Posted by anthonyg23 on June 14, 2008, at 12:37:59

Hey guys,

The ONLY medication that has EVER worked for me has been Serzone. It changed my life in ways I can't even describe. I was anxiety free...instead of the first thought about any topic coming to my head being negative, it would be positive. My attitude was completely different, I was incredibly happy and the outlook on life was positive.

I've tried so many AD's and none work even close to this drug. Does anyone know of anything the is even closely similar in effect to this drug??? Also, I've read a lot about Trazodone as an AD (similar chemical structure)...Would it be worth trying this AD (even though it's used as a sleep-aid more now) to see if it gives me similar effects as the Serzone??

Steven

If you're in the USA serzone is still available as nefezadone and I was prescribe it last summer. Chickened out when heard of liver damage warning. So the med is really great? Maybe I should have continued. If you're new welcome I didn't look for the green flag. But welcome anyway. Love Phillipa

That's why I chicken'd out as well. I don't want to hurt myself in the long run. But, from what I understand Trazodone doesn't have the same black box warning. I loved it though, it was amazing. When I was on it I 4.0'd in college, had many new friends, and had a waay easier time meeting women.

I am in the USA, just scared of the issues about the liver.

Guys, Please Help, You all have so much knowledge!

If your liver will go bad from serzone, it almost always happens early on in treatment. Since you've been on it for awhile before, I would go back to it and have liver tests every 3 months or so. it is a unique med, so substituting it is almost impossible.

Seriously why is it unique? As other meds don't do sqat for me. Thanks Phillipa

Its a 5HT blockade, just like Trazodone, and also Remeron when at high doses -- sort of, instead of a 5HT reuptake inhibitor.

If you can get used to the horse tranquilizer effect that Trazodone has at high doses for adults who need antidepressant effects, then its for you. I doubt most people can sit through that and operate heavy machinery possibly.

Also Trazodone has a peculiar metabolite mCPP, which normally is not harmful to most people, but can deepen psychosis if its latent or present.

It also carries the risk of priapism (unwanted erection), which I have gotten around of twice in a hilarious but humour I won't repeat here again. True priapisms are hospital cases.

Also you -cannot- take any alcohol while adjusting to Trazodone. It can cause a blackout -- at least for me when I thought I had eliminated everything and then took the Trazdone for night and ended up on the bathroom floor.

Anyhow, long story short, if a particular agent is -working- for you then why stop?

The makers of nefazodone (Serzone) fled the liver reports because of deep money assets but generics of course are out there.

What I would suggest is having a liver test at least twice a year if not more -- the ALT (and I think there may be one more), to see what is going on.

If nothing is happening, continue, but remember that everything else you take will also affect the liver, so go easy on NSAIDs (ibuprofen) if possible, and definitely alcohol if possible too.
