Q. for experts (adding wellbutrin or buspirone?)

Posted by x-tof on May 31, 2008, at 8:53:11

I have CFS and spasmophilia.Besides the fatigue, I mainly suffer from anxiety and moodswings, with lack of initiative. The only thing that works well for me is Lorazepam, but I'm not keen on benzodiazepines on the long term.SSRI's definately aren't my choice, I had bad experiences with them (made me more depressed) and the opposite of them (tianeptine), wasn't my answer either.TCA's are helping me for my sleeping problems (Amytriptiline 25mg).
I recently started Amisulpiride 50mg and I have mixed feelings about it. Sometimes I really feel it uplifts my mood and reduces anxiety, it can also make me very irritable and tired with aggravation of my spastic colon (which actually should be good against it..).
So I would like to add something to give the amisulpiride a help.I also take L-theanine (2x100mg/day) but don't notice much of that.
I was thinking of Wellbutrin or Buspirone, both in low dose.
Which one would you recommend?Or perhaps another idea?
Many thanks!

Could you explain what spasmophilia is? I've not heard that term before. I tried to google it and came up with seizure like activity and if seizures is the definition I wouldn't think wellbutrin would be a good choice as in some individuals it can cause them in high doses. I really would like to know the definition. Thanks Phillipa

it's also called "autonomic dysfunction" and is characterized by a muscle and nerve oversensitivity, spasms, anxiety attacks, hyperventilation, fatigue, pain in chest and stomach (including spastic colon).
Stress is a trigger, and a chronic deficiency of magnesium might be the cause.
It often goes hand in hand with cvs or fibromyalgie.
In short, especially an anxiety feeling (without a cause) is the main problem.

I have found another possibility:
how about Lamictal(lamotrigine )?

One doc suggested that I might have (also....) a bipolar disorder with rapid cycle. At the time it seemed ridiculous, coz I've never experienced a real manic episode. But when you consider that SSRI's are bad for me,that I feel good for some weeks with Nortryptiline and then suddenly all bad and depressed again without any reason, there might be something to say for it...?

"Lamictal is a common treatment for bipolar disorder, especially if depression predominates. It can be used to treat chronic pain, especially
neuropathic pain, and may be useful in some refractory cases.
Lamotrigine improves the quality of sleep, especially by increasing the
amount of REM sleep.
Perhaps owing to these multiple modes of action lamotrigine is a medication that improves the condition of many CFS/ME patients.
It also has some antiviral action against HHV6."

SSRI's helped with depression and anxiety for me, but I spun out of control with drinking, drugs, eratic behavior, and detachment.

I added Lamictal as a last ditch before dropping Celexa and it has changed my life...especially with regards to motivation and keeping impulsivity in check.

Now I'm on Buspar as well so I don't have to increase my celexa for anxiety. I'm not sure how they all mix, or how they would mix with an Anti-psychotic like Amisulpride. Ask your doc, as Buspar can have EPS/TD side effects.

Hope this is helpful
