I would like to try taking Topamax instead of Lamictal and I'm curious if anyone has ever made the switch and if so how did it work out??
I'm new to this...very new. I've never asked questions like this, or been this blunt about what I go through...
I don't like some of my meds and I want to go to my pdoc with as much info as possible so she takes me seriously.
I have cyclothymia and OCD and currently take lamictal, effexor XR, and wellbutrin...I also have a long history of self-harm.
I like wellbutrin, but I still get really depressed a lot and lately my mind has been wandering back to thoughts of hurting myself, which really scares me...could switching my mood stabilizer help that??

Possibly not. I would simply add the Topamax to Lamictal. Sometimes Lamictal + lithium works to treat rapid cyclicity or a recurrent course. There is no reason not to add Topamax *slowly* to the other drugs you are taking. Just drink plenty of water to help prevent the production of kidney stones.
If multiple mood stabilizers proves inadequate, then I would look to add an antipsychotic like Geodon or Abilify. Zyprexa would almost certainly work better, but it is known to dysregulate glucose and lipid dynamics, and can produce diabetes or Syndrome-X.
