Has anyone tried vitamin B for depression?

Posted by Maria3667 on May 27, 2008, at 13:31:34

Hi guys 'n gurls,

Every now & again these reports keep creeping up that vitamine B is often low in people with depression (+ anxiety).

Has anyone had a good or bad result trying vitamin B (complex, or a certain type?).

I have tried taken Niacine (vit B3) and it seems to work for half an hour or so. Gives me a nice red flush all over the body & little itchy too... Wonder if I should go higher? I've read 400 mgs/day is the minimum dose.

Take care,
Maria

Hi

I take a multi vitamin B complex as well as Omega 3 & 6 oils, yet I still suffer from depression, severe GAD and panic disorder.

I think it's good as an supplement, but nothing more and - certainly in my case - it hasn't helped my problems.

Saying that, if it works for you then go for it! I know that B vitamins play an important role in mental function.

Seems they make me more anxious now and niacinamide doesn't have the flushing. Phillipa

My pdoc calls vitamins prescribed for psyche problems "placebos".

He says they can be very effective though.

He asked me if I wanted a script. He's a funny man.

I said "Well, NOT NOW - thanks for ruining that..!"

;)

I prefer something that commonly produces the effect I need in the general population. I feel there's enough room for varying responses anyway without trialling something that is very UNLIKELY to help too.

Just my take on it.

Hope you're feeling better soon regardless.

Mr Be Damned.

Hi Maria,

I have tried taking B complex and it worked like an antidepressant during the first two days. After that it did nothing and a month later I had to stop taking it because of side effects.

Perhaps every individual needs a different amount of each B vitamin. Taking 50 mg of each, for instance, may not be the right way to go about it.

Nellie.
