Crazy On You - Heart

Posted by twinch42085 on April 26, 2008, at 1:26:06

I think I might have ADD. pdoc tried me on Strattera....I got to 80mg and could not handle it. Especially with the sexual side effects. Talked to pdoc on phone and he talked about wellbutrin...I don't know how an antidepressant can be effective on someone with ADD....PLUS I am bipolar. Even though research has proven Wellbutrin to be the best antidepressant to use with those who are bipolar. ANYWHO!...I am going to ask about a low dose of methylphenidate or amphetamine.

Which one seems to be the best for everyone?

Thanks : )

vyvanse is a good option for adults and probably more effective than wellbutrin.

Honestly I do not believe that any AD is good for bipolar, but from what I have read on the internet from reliable sources like wikipedia or medical websites. They all say that wellbutrin is a special AD in its own class, and it has a very low potential for triggering manic episodes in bipolar patients. This is all considering if someone should need an AD if they're bipolar.

Thanks : )

Stimulants...hard to say, every person has their own favorite. For me, Ritalin reliably lifts my mood and energy, and then reliably gives me a strange mix of strong anxiety plus fatigue about 4 hours later after it is wearing off. Ritalin to me is effective, but it is a roller coaster ride requiring multiple daytime doses and possibly some kind of relaxant to come down gently in the evening.

Adderall sent me into a vicious depression about 2 hours after I took it. Scared me. Hands shaking, hypersensitive, depressed. But, most people I think prefer Adderall to Ritalin. I found them to be completely different. Ritalin is a friend when I need it, Adderall is not.

Wellbutrin is said to be the safest AD to take with bipolar. I think Zoloft is friendly too, at low doses (12.5mg-25mg). Some clinicians claim that SSRIs actually make good mood stabilizers themselves, that the snris are the dangerous ones for bipolar. In my own experience, I kind of agree with that.

If it were me, I would try Wellbutrin first since it is monotherapy. If no good, add Zoloft. If no good, ditch Wellbutrin, keep Zoloft, add Ritalin. But, that's just me.

I'm BP1 and have tried all of those (one doc insisted I was ADD). As far as mood enhancing properties methlphenidate was by far the best but I ended up abusing it quite a bit. Took it for almost a year and it never made me manic - euphoric due to how I took it - but never manic.

Amphetamine (Adderal/Dexadrine) both made me way too zoned in. To be honest all I wanted to do was sit at the computer and watch porn all day :( And it was like I couldn't get myself to switch tasks. The first few days I'd get a little mood bump from them but after that they were almost numbing...

Wellbutrin was a huge disappointment for me. It sounds awesome on paper (no sexual side effects / increased dopamine / etc) so I had very high hopes. After 5-days taking 300mg of the extended release I developed the WORST akethesia ever - and I'd never experienced that before. Basically I couldn't sit still at all w/o feeling this unbearable urge to move. I couldn't watch TV, use the computer, go anywhere, etc....it was HORRIBLE. I live w/ my folks in Florida so I spent three days in the SPA and/or shower as the water contact was the only way to avoid the feeling. Eventually my doc gave me clonopin (day 3) to get through and eventually I recovered. I've never read of anyone else having such a bad experience with wellbutrin but that was mine. www.askapatient.com would have more anecodes on it.

As for me I'm currently on Lamictal (w/ a small dose of Seroquel at night to make sure I sleep). It's done the job for over a year at keeping me from getting depressed. I'm cutting back a bit (from 100 to 50) to see if I feel a little more myself. I also play guitar and have been having hand cramping problems so I'm trying to figure out if Lamictal is in some way related to that. But bottom line it's been a pretty good drug for me (no sexual side effects/etc)....

So of the three you mentioned I'd say go Ritalin - just try not to take it more often then prescribed as I did...

Cheers,

-Jay
