Uncontrolable Shivering - but no meds

Posted by Mike Andersen on April 3, 2008, at 21:28:25

Sorry for cross posting, but another poster over on the health board suggested I post here and ask if anybody knows much about the occasional uncontrolable shivering symptoms I experience, because there's more traffic over on this board. Please read the original post here:

I haven't been taking any anti-depressant meds for about 1 year now. However, I have an old perscription for Xanax. It never did my state of mind much good, so I never finished the perscription. But I never tried using it to control my shivering episodes. Does anybody have any thoughts about whether or not using Xanax to control those symptoms would be a good idea? Please advise. Thanks!

Mike

Mike wow complicated and sure do hope some of the true med experts answer. Seems like you've seen a host of specialists and no answers right? Well do you feel anxiety or panic during the episodes? I wonder if even through you say it's not a seizure if it could be some strange type of mini one. Ever had an EEG done or better yet sleep studies where they attach the electrodes and monitor your sleep? That way someone would have recorded exactly what happens if during the night. Best of luck to you and welcome to babble. Love Phillipa

Well.....I went to Mexico when I was 19. More of an adventure for me than for some as I had never left Australia before. I bought a car in Tucson (a V8 Oldsmobile) & drove all-the-way-around the coast over 6 months.

I had constant low-grade food poisoning the whole time. Pardon me but I used to burp "sulfur"...!

In those days I wasn't taking ANY drugs at all.

One night in a hotel somewhere in Chiapas I got really bad night sweats. In the morning I was tired but otherwise fine. This went on for a few days.

When I got back home to Oz-teralia some months later I used to still get night sweats 3 or 4 times a year for the next few years. My doctor thought I must have got some weird virus but we never investigated further & after a few more years I never had it again. It's been about 20 years now & I've never had it once since. Strange.

So.....what I am saying is maybe there's a bacterial or viral cause for your shivering? I'm pretty convinced mine was. Worth ruling out maybe?

Best Of Luck :)

Funny was in St. Thomas one time and second day there had some type of viral thing I thought. But then the wierdest thing if I drank alchohol wasn't hardly on any benzo then if any at all and my feet would itch so bacly had to soke them in water. Got home and same thing and it took quite a few months to go away. Someone said might have eatten fish from wrong side of Island as poisonout there????? Phillipa

Thanks for the tip about clonazepam, nfc. I think I've found a proximate, but not the ultimate, cause of my current spate of shivering: looks like I'm passing a series of small kidney stones. Too small to be seen, or to cause me a lot of pain (I have noticed some pain in my flank but attributed it to a sore back). But it's enough to trigger this reaction in my body. I had the urine test done yesterday, and they say there's a little bit of blood in my urine, which would be consistent with small stones. The good news is that with plenty of water I'll pass the damn things out and that will be the end of it. For now.

The other good news is that I tried Xanax (0.5 mg)to control the shaking the other night, and it mostly sort of kinda worked. The shaking was substantially reduced and I was able to go to sleep relatively quickly. The Xanax was from an old perscription for anxiety. I never really felt like it did much for my anxiety, but for this kind of thing it really did make a difference. The bad news is that Xanax, when taken at night (when the shakes happen) knocks me out cold for like, 12 hours. I'm going back to my psychiatrist and ask him about similar drugs with shorter half-lives. If I can get something that gets this reaction under control without making me a zombie until noon the following day I'll be much happier.

And thanks to everyone who has posted to this thread :) I'll update again after I talk to my shrink and let you know what he says about this latest development.

Great you found an answer did they give you a thing to strain your urine and any stones would be left behind to see. Also an ultrasound would show stones. Good luck. Phillipa
