Advice about Strattera

Posted by twinch42085 on March 24, 2008, at 17:18:42

Hello Everyone. Went to my pdoc today and he wants to try me on Strattera first to see if that works. He was skeptical at first of trying me on stimulants for ADD. He said that we would give it a few weeks and if I didn't seem to be doing any better than we would try a different approach. Started me out at 25mg for 1 week and then I should move up to 40mg. Told me that typical adult dosage is 80mg. Has anyone tried strattera for ADD and had success with it?

Thanks : )

There's where I posted about it last summer. Hope something in there helps.

I still take it at the same dosage, and it still provides great relief.

Interesting! I am glad that it is still helping. I am going to give it a try for a few weeks to see if it helps. I read in one of the articles that sometimes a low dose of a stimulant is used as an augmentation with the strattera?

Thanks : )

defenitely raise dose slowly

my Dr had me take 1/2 100 mg. pill first night
3/4 100 mg. pill 2nd night
100 mg. pill 3rd night & thereafter
(i have a high tolerance for all meds. - & usually get no response on lower doses - usually dont get a response to higher, though either)

1st & 2nd day after taking, felt a little dizzy, headache, etc.
3rd, 4th, & 5th day - felt terrible
wouldnt advise

after 5th day, though, all side effects have wained

Im taking it w/ small dose (for me - considering rapid tolerance i have felt many times after 2 weeks of starting again)of daytrana

have felt a little more rapid heart rate - could be caffeine & L tyrosine I took yesterday though
hope it will help U, I & anyone else who's trying it

good luck

Just Started Strattera For ADHD

My p-doc gave me 28 40 milligram samples. I took the first today. My hands feel cold that must be the NE. My mind feels alert and not jittery yet. I think I'll stay on this dose for three weeks and see how it goes.If I up the dose it will be slowly such as 20 milligrams at a time.I've tried other stims in the past but always built up a fast tolerance to them. Think I'll dump the luvox and see if this does the trick.

Took first dose today. starting at 25mg. After 1 hour I felt very energized and my thoughts were very clear. Hopefully this will last. I increase to 40mg next week.

Thanks : )

Same response here. I've heard it takes three weeks to work. Seems to be doing something already. Reminds me a bit of how ritalin felt.

The pdoc told me that usual adult dosage is 80mg. Is it common for the effects to where off after a few months? I have read a couple of posts where those who have been taking it are still doing well on it.

Thanks : )

I have never tried it and i'm a little confuzed on how it feels. Some people report that they feel more energized while others reports drowsiness.
So, i want to ask if this med is generally considered activating or sedating or just neutral.

152 over 92...with my blood pressure meds normally 120 over 70. But this was on only 40 mg.
Felt a little like a long lasting ritalin. I felt very energized. Drugs that block reuptake of NE usually elevate bp. So if you have blood pressure problems be aware on this med.

I'm somewhat amazed to see that some people have had a positive experience with Strattera.

I tried 40 mg for a week (only a week, as it's darned expensive here in comparison with the alternatives, and also because I was skeptical).

It didn't do anything but cause some minor side effects, raising the heart rate (possibly the blood pressure too) and producing a shivering / hair-raising tendency.

Basically the same was true in a previous, more than 4-week long, experience with reboxetine, another selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). After months without SNRIs, I tried adding reboxetine to selegiline, and found the previously described side-effects exacerbated considerably, but additionally noted also coldness of the extremities, feelings of exhaustion, and drowsiness - I almost fell asleep while driving. The experiment was repeated later with the same results.

Additional effects noted during the initial trial with reboxetine were a tendency to emotional blunting and depersonalisation. It put an end to a syndrome of depressive feelings, including suicidal ideation, oversensitivity, and agitability - symptoms that haven't returned years after cessation of reboxetine. While that effect was most welcome at the time, it may not be welcomed by everyone. I've seen complaints from others of similar - or even more intense - experience with reboxetine.

I think the problem with ssri's or snri's is the strong reuptake of only one neurotransmitter. If one's problem is the imbalence of only ne or se you may get great results but I have a feeling that is a minority of ppl. To this day maois and tca's work better for atypical depression or major depression than these newer drugs. They also work on both ne and se and in the case of maois also da.
