Luvox: (Faverin)The best antidepressant out there!

Posted by Mishal on September 18, 2007, at 2:31:12

May be this is an overenthusiasm. But after taking fluvoxamine 150mg for only a few days, I can tell you it is the best antidepressant (I have ever tried) in terms of efficacy and lack of side effects (especially sexual side effects)

I have tried Prozac, Tryptizol, Prothiaden, Cipralex, Zoloft, Seroxat, Mianserin, Remeron..

And if I want to spot the best among them, without any doubt, I will point to Luvox (faverin in Europe and in this part of world)

I am just afraid of the poop out phenomena. Will Luvox lose its efficacy after repeated dosing? I mean may be years after?

Is there any hepatic side effects?

Just curious; how exactly is it different than the others you've tried. Any side effects? Is it sedating? Do you take it in the morning or evening?

I'm thinking of trying it too. I pretty much have hated every AD I've tried for various reasons. Was thinking of Luvox, Prozac (tried it for one day before and had severe anxiety because of it, but no benzo was on board). If I try Prozac again, I'll have a benzo available.

Actually was thinking of trying the mild opioid Ultram for depression (don't know that my doc will let me though). But he's let me try all different classes including benzo, MAOI, and stimulants. (Nothing has thus far worked). The only ones that were of marginal benefit were Zoloft, Remeron, and to a lesser extent, Serzone. I can take a little bit of Paxil at night in microdose too.

Back to Luvox, how does it make you feel? Think I'll give it a go starting next week.

Do you know if you can still buy the brand, or is only the generic available now?

Brooke generic in the US. Been on it for years. First time it was relaxing with benzos too. Then a few years later on it again and I was fine. Got up to 250 and had loads of energy with the benzos. But for some reason it only gave the energy about two weeks. But it is the only ad I can tolerate sedating. But again with benzos. But I have this problem with ad's and fear can't get over l00mg. And would it work after being on it for so many years in low doses? But it's the most sedating to me of the SSRI's. Phillipa

I asked my doctor about it and he said you can only take it by itself, so he isn't much of a fan. He likes to mix drugs. But, if I get too desperate I might just ask him if I can try it. Marplan is next though.

No emotional blunting. Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac all these SSRIs made me numb. But this one doesn't do it. Contrary to the others Luvox motivates me.

Yes. There's a kind of jitteriness without being too much anxious. It is sedating, so I take the full dose in the evening time. If you are prone to anxiety, just keep some benzos with you to use in case.

Though a little early to say, I would dare Luvox gave me back my pre-depression life. Or it makes it a little better dissipating unwanted thoughts.

Try it. It is highly underrated in US. Throughout here in Middle East, it is the first line antidepressant.

Luvox was great for me too, especially the lack of sexual side effects. But that does kick in if you go over 150mg like all the others SSRI's. Unfortunately it pooped out on me at 300mg, but don't stress this doesn't happen to everyone. I'm now on Zoloft and I find it even better, everyone reacts differently to different drugs. Just a quick word of warning, it did have quite a nasty discontinue syndrome, so go very slowly if you ever have to taper off OK!! GOOD LUCK, I'm glad you've found something that works for you.

Cactus what happened as I go from l00 to 25 all the time. Phillipa ps funny thing is the ad's give me no withdrawal it's being on them that makes me miserable hence to many years of low dose luvox only one I can tolerate.

I would suggest to stick to the EXACT same dose for at least 3 months minium , no questions asked. If you keep upping and downing your dose you will get nowhere

That's great info, Mishal. I think I'll give this one a try too.

I'm with you on this. I don't have trouble with withdrawal; not even Effexor or Remeron. It's the being on them that gives me nothing but trouble. I can only tolerate a tiny bit of Paxil (like, 2.5 mgs). Zoloft (my first too) was nice for a while, but it felt almost like a short acting street drug, in that I'd take it, brain would feel short circuited for like an hour or so, then I'd feel really good for about 3 or 4 hours, then I'd crash. The 3 or 4 hours were fun to be sure, but the daily roller coaster ultimately was not a good thing. I've tried a slew of them since then; practically all with bad effects.

Still, I'll give Luvox a try. I liked the idea of trying Ultram too (did a bit of research on that). You'd have to have a pdoc that really pushed the envelope to let you try Ultram for depression though (and then only after you've tried pretty much every other med class out there).

Two completely different answers hence the hesitation to change things even though I feel miserable? Phillipa

I can't see what you mean at all about there being 2 different answers. Just try sticking to the same dose for at least 3 months and see how you go

Well, so far, so good for me with Luvox, though I'm not yet taking a therapeutic dose. I like to start low to see if I can handle it.

Seems to have very few side effects so far. I feel neither anxious nor sedated.

I've had early positive signs before only to have them turn ugly fast, so who knows. Only been trying this for 3 days so far. I took 25 mgs first two days, 12.5 (approx) yesterday and today.

I notice nothing even on l00mg haven't ventured beyond that in years but at one time 250mg and felt fine. And probably would have continued to if the pdoc didn't need l0 people for a celexa trial I said no he switched me anyway and never was the same again same as that low dose of paxil. Phillipa
