Fluoxetine + Sibutramine Combo

Posted by James_glasgow on August 24, 2007, at 10:25:42

Hi there,

Has any one tried these two medicines in combination or indeed any SSRI with Sibutramine (Reductil, here in the UK, I beleive Meridia in the US). I would like to try but I am concerned about developing serotonin syndrome or mania. I have a marked tendancy to flip over to the other pole on antidepressants (regardless of the type used, and I have been through them all). I have also taken the combination of Paroxetine and Trazadone (for sleep), and this had a dramatic effect after the 2nd night of taking the Trazadone (not sure if I became mania, or developed minor serotonin syndrome, or even both), what I would imagine taking amphetamine at a pretty high dose is like. I have probably just answered my own question, but does any one have experience of this. The Sibutramine caps I have are "only" 5mg, and since it is not a controlled substance here in the UK it is perfectly legally to import 3 months worth.

Thanks.

James

Have you tried the med checker through google. Sorry don't have the link. Worth checking it out. Phillipa

Dr. Ken Gilllman has done an interesting article on sibutramine and serotonin syndrome:

thanks Philipa and Quintal, I might give it a try and see what happens. Maybe have the dose, which is already very low at 5mg's. It is to help with SSRI related weight gain, which seems a little odd as the drug itself is considered an SSRI (I wonder if there are any studies to show Sibutramine causes weight gain in the longer term). Cheers. James

I think sibutramine is considered to have broader action than an SSRI isn't it? It's also a powerful noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, dopamine a little less so. Yes, it's odd sibutramine shows no antidepressant effects itself either - that's what the whole article is about.

I took it a few years ago with tramadol and had a spectacular antidepressant response though, but a terrible crash when I came off it. I still have some in my cupboard actually. I've never seen anything that suggests sibutramine causes weight gain in the longer-term, in fact it's often used successfully for several years at a time.
