Halcion - First Timer - Feedback?

Posted by nolegirl23 on July 7, 2007, at 21:18:34

Hi there,
It's been a while since I've last posted, so most of you probably don't remember me.
I have Bulimia Nervosa, Bipolar Disorder, Panic Disorder, and OCD.
I take Lexapro, Lamictal, Xanax XR, and regular Xanax.
I am having a procedure done to my back - injections into my spine. I explained to my pain mgt. doc that I am terrified of needles and was hoping that we could opt for a non invasive form of pain management.
He said that based on my MRI, he wants to give me these injections. He showed me the needle (HUGE NEEDLE!) and showed me on a model spine where he was going to inject me.. I FREAKED out, told him that there was NO way that I was going to have that done to me, blah blah blah..
After my ranting and raving, my Dr. told me that he would be prescribing me Halcion to take before I go in for the injections. He said that the Halcion would take care of any fear or anxiety that I had in reference to the shots.
I've seen posts on here about Halcion in the past, but I can't remember what was said about it.
I guess my question is, what IS Halcion? What will it do to me, is it dangerous, and what are your experiences with this drug?
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks!

Sure, I remember you.

Halcion is triazolam, a benzodiazapine. It's most often prescribed as a sleep aid (hypnotic), but it is also similar in action to some benzos used for surgical sedation. It's used in dental surgeries, for example, as it works synergistically with local anaesthesia for pain control. It sounds like your pain doctor is offering you just the right way to manage this anxiety about the procedure.

I've been getting injections into my spine every three weeks for some time now. Really, there is no treatment they can offer you that has as few side effects.

Just tell them there is no reason for you to see the needle ever again. Just let them do their thing.

Best,
Lar

I agree on the needle as before they took spinal fluid I saw it and thank heavens I was taking chloral hydrate at the time . Good luck and I hope they work well for you. Love Phillipa

Thank you all for your feedback. The docs at the pain clinic told me to go ahead and take the day off due to the Halcion, so I'll be home and safe in order to deal with the side-effects.

Since you're taking Xanax XR and Xanax which are in the same group as Halcion, I'm wondering whether Halcion will be strong enough in your case. Why can't the doctor use a different type of medication in your case, like Chloral Hydrate that Pippa had?
