Misconceptions about Valium addictiveness

Posted by Cynthia_Greene on March 28, 2007, at 14:08:47

Why are doctors so afraid to prescribe it, yet will give you other benzos. Valium is nowhere near as addictive or strong as Xanax or all of those other horrible new benzos they're so fond of giving out.

.......because it's old, and has, over time, acquired a bad reputation in the US.

My last post didn't come out quite right. I made it sound like Valium deserves its reputation. I don't think it does.

I think some of it is $$$--xanax is still big in the US, even now that we know it can cause problems, because of all the $$$ and the big push to use it for everything in the 80s and 90s. Klonopin is big b/c its a) trendy and b) there's that new dissolving form of it that seems to be really popular (why, I'm not sure...)

Plus, most people think "Valium", "ohh, hardcore, Mother's Little helper, blah blah blah". Its kind of ridiculous.

I love that song 'Mothers Little Helper'. Good old Rolling Stones. Ironically I went on Valium to lesson my anxiety with my mother's cancer.

On Valium during the funeral. I didnt even cry. I think it had something to do with the delayed reaction/coping with her death.

I did not get addicted though because it annoyed my that I didnt cry during the funeral. Shortly after the funeral though, I took some. I painted some pictures to deal with my emotions. Some of the best work Ive even done.

I'm glad that it was around now that I think about it. And now that I've coped with her death, I can take a bow to Valium, and move on.

I think they all cause dependance & I don't think one is better than the other in this reguard.

Addiction is a totally different matter, psychological aspects come into play. People
have drugs of choice in addiction so I think it is highly variable as to which benzo is more addictive.

OTOH, if you have an addictive personality/have problems with addiction then benzos are not for you. So I see this as a non-issue.

I have a history of substance abuse so my PDOC will only prescribe Rivotril (Clonazepam/Klonopin) because she said that Ativan and Xanax have a shorter half-life and I would feel great on them and want to keep taking more as soon as the effects wore off. She said the only other one she would prescribe for me would be Valium.

I don't understand how people get high from Xanax; I felt horrible on it.

Right, that is the difference between dependance
and addiction.
