Can Geodon take off the effect of effexor?

Posted by RVP on September 3, 2006, at 0:42:57

My doc gave Geodon about 3 months ago. But it hasnt helped me with my depression, than I added venlafaxine 300mg/day 3 weeks ago. But I felt no efect. So can Geodon be guilty of this lack of antidepressant effect? Or should I rise the venlafaxine dosage. Tanks any info.

First, I think you need to wait longer to evaluate venlafaxine. It can take 6 weeks to produce results.

I think the Geodon is NOT affecting the venlafaxine. It might be making you feel cognitive side effects, but it would not prevent the venlafaxine from working.

This is just my opinion. Other people might think differently.

How many weeks have you been taking venlafaxine total?

If you have been titrating the dosage up gradually over the course of a few months, then it is time to make a change.

What alternatives have you been discussing with your doctor?

I've been taking about 4 weeks. I am thinking in add bupropion to rise the noradrenergic/dopaminergic axis. Would be it a good idea? or should I waith more?

If you have felt no antidepressant effect at all, or none that you can convince yourself of, it may be time to try a new med, or add one. As I understand these things, if you have not felt at least an -effect- by this time, it is less likely that you will.

Some docs push effexor up higher, though. It's possible 400mg could help, but I sort of think it unlikely. ...Different people take different amounts of time to respond to antidepressants. For me, a drug always reaches full effect by 3 weeks or less. Others may take 12 weeks, so if you have previous experience with antidepressants, you might use that as a guide, for how long you need to stay on effexor.

Good luck
