Calling SLS

Posted by Tom Twilight on June 10, 2006, at 15:34:51

Hey Scott

I was wondering if you could help

You may or may not know that I've been thinking of going abroad for treatment
(I live in Cambridge UK by the way)

The reason I want to do this is partly caused by shear desperation, and because I really want to get away from home for a while.

I suffer from Social Anxiety disorder, and possible ADD, also quite depressed and anxious at the moment.

I'm asking you in particular because I consider you one of most knowlagable posters on the board (without meaning to sound to crawly!)

Have you got any thoughts on going abroad for treatment?
Can you recomend any US Pdocs

P.S.
Your babblemail is turned off-I'm assuming this is intentional

Tom, I think it is great to always get a second opinion. Here is a list of top US pdocs ...

http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.psychiatrists.html

you can also email the creator of that web site, Dr. Ivan Goldberg. He takes patients and he answers questions ... Psydoc@PsyCom.Net

Good luck and God bless.

That sounds like a good list. I've heard of a couple of them, that I think are psychoanalysts too--and maybe the combination of psychodynamic and pharmacological approaches is best.

The list was compiled by Ivan Goldberg--maybe he could advise you more specifically if you emailed him. He seemingly has a website.

I'm sure there are some great people in New York also besides Goldberg, whom I don't know anything about except his web presence.

I really can't add anything to what the other posters have suggested. I do think that New York City offers many opportunities for treatment. I like the program they have at Columbia / New York Presbyterian. The other place I would consider going to is Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard University. It is located in Boston Massachusetts. Also, there is a clinical center nearby that does good work. It is named McLean Hospital.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Goldberges list is good, although its a bit out of date sadly.

Did contact Goldberge
He gave me a really good reply

Unfortunatly he wanted to either have some one in the UK to supervise treatment, or travel back to New York when he needs to see me, which might be rather difficult!

Still it would be nice to see a doctor who new what they were doing!

Don't know of a list, but there are a couple of excellent analytic institutes in New York-- the New York Psychoanalytic and William Alanson White Institute; also Columbia Prebyterian has an analytic institute. I'd focus on training or supervising analysts at those places, for example, because they tend to be senior people whose work is known and respected.

There are also training institutes and good analytic centers in other cities, and it really depends a lot on where you live--

There are a bunch of psychoanalytic journals, and their editorial boards and the authors of articles in them are usually good sources of referrals, IMO.

Scott,

Do you have a pdoc in NYC? I live in Brooklyn and have a pdoc who I don't trust.

Thanks,

honeybee

Honeybee, why don't you trust him/her?

Is there some specific expertise, or approach you're looking for?

Honeybee,

I have pdoc in NYC, on the East Side, who I think is excellent (for me). I have treatment for ADHD, inattentive type. More importantly I have an internist who I trust enormously (Greenwich Village) who is committed, caring, talented and a genuine good guy. New York Magazine just published their annual Best Doctors in NYC edition which is always interesting.

Good luck, babble me for more info if you like,
Aloha
