Lamictal + Parnate?

Posted by fires on May 22, 2006, at 10:28:12

I've been on Lamictal 300 mg for quite a while. Helps a lot with hypomania.

Added Parnate recently. Started at 10 mg, now at 20 mg. Feel horrible: extreme sedation, depression worse, weird breathing (breathe out hard) Very sleepy after eating lunch.

I had great success with Parnate 60 mg (alone) for many years. Can the effects be that much different when combined with Lamictal?

Is it probable that 10 mg of Parnate could be beneficial for depression when on 300 mg Lamictal?

Looks like I'll have to rechallenge Parnate several times to find out whether or not it is the Parnate causing the problems.

Also, why does Lamictal have antidepressant properties? Works on all 3 main neurotransmitters. or favors one over the others?

Anyone?

I also did not like the combo if its any help.I found parnate alone better/the combo worsened my depression, and agigtated mania and compulsive thinking.

I also added Parnate 30mg to Lamictal 300mg; worked like 4, 5 days then crashed.

This is the only time I tried Parnate.

Experiences with other meds tell me that I need to continue to try to increase the Parnate. (At least a couple of times).

I'm at 300 mg Lamictal, in spite of telling my pdoc that I couldn't even tolerate 25 mg. I have other health problems that make it hard to tell what med is doing what.

One thing you would want to check is your Blood Pressure: mine was increasing even a 10mg about 30 min after I took it. With 30mg my BP was increase by 30 points! from 125-130 to 155-160.
Lamictal related in some individuals ? unlikely, but...

What are your side effects with Lamictal ?

I have to be concerned about the other end of the BP spectrum -- orthostatic hypotension. I had some real low BPs in the past.

At 25 mg I told my doc that I was very tired and felt somewhat drugged. My neurologist told me to re-start it because that's not a usual Lamictal side effect.

I honestly can't be sure right now. It's currently hard to distinguish between side effects and med symptoms. I take Lamictal, Parnate, Klonopin and 4 other meds for other conditions.

I do think that it's safe to say that I feel better on Lamictal alone, or with only 10 mg of Parnate, than I did with 300 mg Wellbutrin.
