Which mood stabilizer to augment SSRI + Adderall?

Posted by jparsell82 on April 11, 2006, at 15:25:44

Hey everyone,

I was hoping to get some input on this. I'm taking Lexapro and Adderall right now. Which mood stabilizers would be good to augment this? I'm trying to find one that isn't prone to too many cognitive side effects. I know Lamictal isn't too bad, but what is there besides Lamictal? It seems most of the others have cognitive side effects. Thanks!

Why are you looking to use a mood-stabilizer? Are you bipolar?

I found Trileptal to be pretty clean. It really does have some antidepressant properties.

Lamictal can cause memory problems, especially at dosages of 300mg and higher.

Keppra isn't too bad as far as cognition is concerned. However, it can exacerbate depression. I found that it had antidepressant properties at 1000mg, but worsened my depression at 2000mg.

Hey, sorry it took so long to respond. Anyways, I've been suggested by a psychopharmacologist that I might be Bipolar II. I think I might be and the combination of an SSRI and Adderall might make me restless and irritable. Surprisingly, with all the tons of meds I've taken... I've never took Adderall with an ssri. Nardil wasn't working out cognitively for me, so I'm trying this combo with Klonopin or a mood stabilizer. I like Klonopin, but I'd rather stay away from it because of the cognitive side effects. Maybe I'll give the Trileptal a try. Is there that much difference between Tegretol and Trileptal? Thanks a lot!

Hi Josh.

I would opt for Trileptal. I found it to be a very clean drug with a mild antidepressant effect. I suffered no cognitive side effects. My only complaint is that I developed patches of dry skin on my hands and fingers.
