is provigil the buspar of adhd?

Posted by mike99 on March 15, 2006, at 10:07:56

I get the impression provigil more or less just keeps you awake rather than helping with inattention and hyperactivity. I believe has received FDA approval for ADHD under the name "Sparlon".

I've read a few prior PB posts reporting positive effects with attention span, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. And I also haven't heard any positive regarding hyperactivity.

Could anyone share some thoughts/experiences on this?

I just took my first dose today (100 mg) for ADHD inattentiveness. It's hard to know how I feel because I also took Ambien CR last night for the first time. But essentially, I woke up this a.m., took my meds, did my light therapy at about 7:45 a.m., then went back to sleep til about 1:00 p.m. It certainly didn't make me feel more alert and awake. Although perhaps it was lingering effects of the ambien CR?

I'll keep you posted. I can't take any of the other ADHD meds according to my pdoc, because I also take Nardil. But my inattentiveness is causing functional problems for me, and I really want some relief.

Provigil is really an alertness drug in my oppinion. If your concentration problem is related to low alertness (lack of sleep, other drugs) then it may help. But ADD is not really due to lack of alertness, but rather lack of attention or focus.

I'm no master of ADD by any means, just how I would think of it.

There would really need to be clinical trials.

sparlon, guanfacine » linkadge

Hey linkadge,

Modafinil has received FDA approval to be marketed as Sparlon for ADHD. Nonetheless that does not support it's efficacy in my book.

Do you have any thoughts on guanfacine (Tenex) by any chance?

Seems it's probably calming and sedating but doesn't help with focus from what I can gather.

Okay, no ambien or ambien CR last night because I was up too late. I took my Provigil this a.m. (100 mg) and don't feel sleepy like I did yesterday, although I did sleep later than usual since I didn't get to sleep til very late last night. And I didn't do light therapy.

I'm still quite cranky today, but that's probably PMS versus related to Provigil or anything else. (sorry if overshare).

I feel a tiny bit "juiced", as if I was a bit wired on caffeine. Not exactly accomplishing much today, so no leap in focus or productivity.

Keeping fingers crossed....

Excessive sleepiness was Ambien CR's fault

I took one last night at bedtime and slept for about 12 hours. So I don't think the provigil contributed to my daytime sleepiness the other day.

So far so good with provigil as far as no side effects. Not sure if it's really doing anything at 100 mg, though. I may have to call my pdoc to ask about increasing.

Well at least it sounds like you're not having significant side effects at 100mg Provigil. Good luck.
