I need a med that will jumpstart me like...

Posted by Colleen D. on February 20, 2006, at 11:41:05

Effexor did before it pooped out on me. It would be a med for depression. My anxiety is well under control with Klonopin.

I tried Zoloft which made me too sleepy all day long, Wellbutrin, which also put me to sleep mid-day, and Lexapro, which didn't really seem to do much. Cymbalta didn't seem to do much either.

I am back to emotional outbursts (angry ones) and crying at the drop of a hat after being off SSRIs/SNRIs for about a month. I thought I could get by with just Klonopin during the day and doxepin at bedtime for insomnia, but obviously I NEED something for depression.

Thanks!

p.s. - Weight gain is an issue. I have gained back the 30 lbs. I lost while on Effexor and I hate my body right now!

Nardil is an alternative to keep in mind.

It very often is. Cost versus benefit?

A TCA will likely not provide a "jump start." The ones I've tried have definite sedative effects.

I second the Nardil. Maintaining the dietary restrictions is not difficult, and I didn't notice a weight gain issue any worse than the SSRIs. In fact, having to be conscious of what I was eating while on Nardil, I ate a little more healthy. If I was dealing with depression only, it probably would have done the trick.

HI EE! I guess I should have mentioned that I have tried TCAs as well and found them to be too sedating...that's why I use the doxepin for sleep. Thanks for your input, though.

Hi Scott! Thanks for your response. As I recall, you mentioned in your response to a previous post of mine that Nardil might be a good choice for me. I guess I needed to be reminded! I will make an appointment tomorrow to find out more asap.

Yes: TCAs have been very sedating for me.

No matter how I ask the question, the answer seems to be "Nardil." I may have to try it. Thanks!

I didn't see prozac on that list. It was the only ssri to give me a jump start that lasted quite a while (5 years). Every now and then someone does get sleepy on prozac, but in most cases it has a stimulating nature to it. Of all the ssris, I think prozac would be the least likely to cause sedation. When I first tried it, I got that jump start effect beginning on the second day. I don't take it any more. But, whenever I get in real bad shape, I will mix some in a bottle of water and chug maybe 2.5mg of it and it almost always gives me that jump start in about 6 hours. I keep thinking maybe I should be back on it. Anyway, prozac 10mg for a while, maybe up to 20mg. People tend to get either agitated, apathetic, or sedated at higher doses. The lower doses in my own experiences work better.

I can also get that jump start effect from miniscule amounts of cymbalta (like a mere 1mg), but the effects fade in about 3 days and then dose increases do not bring back the good effect.

So if you want to stay in the ssri/snri class, you only have paxil, luvox, and prozac to choose from. Paxil and luvox would likely be sedating. Prozac not likely.

Hi blueberry!

You know, Prozac is one of the SSRIs I was also considering. And I would feel comfortable asking my GP for it, so I wouldn't have to make an appt. with a pdoc yet. I'll probably have to wait at least a month to get in to see a pdoc through the public mental health services here, so in the meantime... Thanks for the info. I once worked with/for someone who was on Prozac and she was the liveliest, warmest, funniest person when she was on it. Otherwise she was a real b*tch. Some may say that about me too, on and off the meds I've taken. I guess it's so easy to overlook the older SSRIs when there are so many newer ones on the market.

Colleen, yeah, prozac is sure worth a shot. The jump start thing. The sedation thing. It makes sense on paper anyway. Of course, to play the other side, you know how mileage varies.

Prozac was termed by some researchers as an atypical ssri. While all the others are actually relatively similar to one another, prozac is quite unique from them all. Possibly because it antagonizes a certain serotonin receptor where none of the others do, and that results in stimulating the release of norepineprhine and dopamine in addition to the serotonin enhancement.

I would start at 10mg. If you get 20mg caps, you can empty one into a glass of juice, stir it, drink 1/4 or 1/2 glass, put the rest in the fridge for the next day, then stir again, and so on.

Another good thing about it...since it is generic it is cheap.

Blueberry if this luvox doesn't keep sedating me to the point of falling asleep each day my next choice if given one will be prozac. ps I've even cut down on valium for sleep don't even need it. Fondly, Phillipa
