I'm young and i need VALIUM: what is it???

Posted by MrBrice on February 3, 2006, at 0:54:16

Hi,

i've been consulting my p-doc for 1.5 years now. First i was a little depressed, now the depression has mostly gone, but I'm certainly not healthy yet.
I just can't seem to relax: wether it's on the train, the bus, at home with my brothers and parents, in the college classroom...I'm never comfortable! little muscle spasm are usual with my, and there seems to be this awkward atmosphere around me...

So my doctor took aan EEG test and told me that indeed i was a little anxious, and that we were going to try some medication for it. He was going to think about what to give me tough...

Now i think it'll probably be valium right...so what is it, valium??? Does it make you feel like a zombie?? Are you still energetic when on it? Can someone see it when you've taken valium???
thanks

Hi

What makes you think your doctor is going to prescribe Valium?

Valium is a brand name for diazepam, a benzodiazepine anti-anxiety drug.

Hi there!
First of all, don't worry. You need to be informed, but you don't need to be frightened.
I'm not sure that your doctor will put you on valium. There are lots of meds that can help you calm down, and each is particularly effective in certain circumstances. It sounds like your doctor is looking for the specific drug to help you given your unique circumstances.
So... what is valium, and what are the other drugs, etc. Valium is a drug in a class of drugs called benzodiazepenes. These are used to treat anxiety, as a sededave, and for other uses.
I was on alprazolam (zanax) for quite a while. It didn't turn me into a zombi. Sometimes my co-workers would notice that I would start talking really fast, or I couldn't settle down, they would remind me to "take a pill"
Now for the portion to keep this thread on the substance use page.
These drugs can be habit forming, especially when not taken as prescribed. It is dangerous to mix these drugs with alcohol. For some people who have substance abuse problems, doctors will avoid prescribing this class of drugs because of the potential for abuse.
If you have a problem with over-use of substances, make sure that your doc knows about this before he prescribes something to you.
With all of that being said, there has only been one known case of someone actually dying from valium, and that person had mixed it with alcohol. Her name was Karen Ann Quinlan, and that happened in 1976. These are very safe drugs.
As far as side effects, they can include drowsiness, nervousness, etc. but as I said, I didn't personally experience those symptoms.
You can do some research on your own. Go to the drug companies and check out their literature. Here is a good site on Valium. There are others on the other benzodiazepenes too.

Good luck, and don't worry. Be informed, but don't worry.

thanks for your kind words deirdre.

now i don't know if it's going to be valium, i'm just guessing it because it's about the only 'calming' drug i know.
I hope he can give me something that would just make me feel at ease, that the pain-in-the-*ss tension i have could just make room for some decontractation. You know some alternative medication for this?

Do you guys think that, on valium or xanax or one of the other calming drugs, i could still attend my college class normally? i have to make sure i still pass this year you see... and the last thing i want is a drug that makes me feel 'empty', cause this is something i associate with drugs like valium or xanax. I'm a young guy, i should be jumping around full of energy you see :)

greetings,
Brice

The whole point of psychiatric meds is to make your life livable. If you start feeling zoned out, let your doctor know immediately. If you can't perform in school, then the drug isn't helping, but impairing. There are lots of variables, such as schedules, etc. that go into making the right meds work for a person.
I'm on a couple of meds right now, and I'm able to do really well in school. It's all about working with your doctor, having clear goals in mind, and keeping informed. I think you'll do fine. Just let your doctor know about school. It would be awful to take a med that makes you drowsy before attending class in a crowded lecture hall. Keep your doctor well informed, before he prescribes, and after, just in case the dosage needs to be tweaked.
I'm sure you'll do just fine.

It would be really great if he gave you valium, it is not as dangerous as the other drugs like SSRIs an d neurleptics. And! It may make you feel real good...

Valium probably won't make you feel like a zombie it will just relax you to kingdom-come. SSRIs and those other bad stuff... those may on the other hand.

Valium all the way baby, since 1961 and still going strong!

I also have anxiety problems and have been taking Ativan for many years (ativan is also a benzodiazapine similar to valium) For me ativan has changed my life for the better-it works very well to relieve anxiety. So, don't worry, be happy that your Doc is going to give you "something" to reduce your anxiety-it may not even be a benzo. many drugs can be effective against anxiety-soon you'll be feeling better...but be patient sometimes you have to try several different meds. to find the right one. Best wishes. TylerJ

Valium is a great med. Been around for years. No real bad side effects or withdrawal either. I much prefer them to AD's . Others are xanax, ativan , klonopin. Those are the most popular ones. If you are drozzy for tired your pdoc can decrease the dose or take it at bedtime. Good luck. Fondly, Phillipa

Karen ann Quinlan, took QUAALUDE!(Methaqualone)+booze to cause a long term coma. Valium is as toxic as Lemonade.

5mgs 2-3x daily (short term) may be very beneficial to a Benzo naive person, experiencing excessive anxiety.

Cheers

I think it was a very wise choice by your doctor to actually do an EEG. And then based on that choose the drug to try. I would have guessed that if you walked in as a first time patient and said you felt anxious, the doc would either prescribe an SSRI or other antidepressant right away. Another guess would be ADHD diagnose and stimulant medication. So i'm really glad you actually got a real consultation and some actualy thinking by the doctor.
