Remeron

Posted by yesac on January 18, 2006, at 14:09:06

Has anyone taken Remeron, or have any input on it?

I'm currently taking lithium and Seroquel, and my shrink mentioned that I might want to think about Remeron. I'm not sure if he means along with the Seroquel or instead of it, because I think they're both pretty sedating. I am not tired, fatigued, or exhausted on Seroquel, but I do sleep about 9 or 10 hours a night, which is kind of annoying.

I've tried the vast majority of other antidepressants-- none helped, some made things worse. Lithium and Seroquel help a little bit but not enough... more with agitation and "mind spinning" than actual depression.

I thought seroquel was an antipsychotic used for anxiety at times. How does it help with depression? Fondly, Phillipa

Seroquel and other antipsychotics boost the effects of some SSRIs. I dont know about Lithium.
Remeron is profoundly sedating (some claim less at higher doses, I haven't seen this) and can cause weight gain unless one has a restricted diet. On the other hand, its sometimes a winner of an antidepressant for some despite this unfortunate effect.

I have taken Remeron at various times, and I am on it now, but I have never been on it by itself. I have always had an SSRI Remeron combo. They put me on both because my depression was quite severe, requiring hospitalization, and I couldn't eat or sleep. Remeron will help you do both!

So, I can't answer your question about Remeron by itself. But I answer it from a Lexapro/Remeron combo standpoint...

On the lexapro alone, I don't feel abnormally hungry. On Lex and Remeron, my appetite is stronger and it takes longer to feel satisfied with food. This makes me gain a bit of weight on it, but not to the point of being overweight. I usually gain about 7-10 lbs on it, then it levels off.

It is great for sleep, but that doesn't seem to be your problem. I take it at night, then the Lexapro in the morning.

I think I feel better on both than on just Lexapro alone.

I do know that people here have reported gaining vast amounts of weight on Remeron. Like I said above, my weight gain wasn't especially large, though I don't like it of course. However, on both, I truly think I feel better.

My pdoc has mentioned that mixing Remeron with with an SSRI can help combat the low libido that SSRIs give some people. I am not sexually active, so this isn't something I pay too much attention to.

The couple times I spiraled down into a mini-episode of depression on just Lexapro (about twice in the past three years or so) I went back on Remeron too, and I got out of the episode relatively quickly. Whether that was the addition of the Remeron, or just time, I do not know.

I have also heard Remeron can make some people feel angry. I haven't noticed that myself.

Those are my experiences. Good luck.

I don't know if it's used for anxiety, but probably.

Seroquel has shown to have some modest antidepressant effects. It also helps me to feel less distraught, to calm my mind down, and to be less irritable and agitated. And of course sleep!
