I think different people take prozac at different times. Experimentation to find what works best for you is probably the way to go.

I used to take it in the morning, because I liked the warm stimulation I got from it that began about 2 hours after dosing and lasted about 4 hours.

Even though it has a very very long half life and doctors say it doesn't matter when you take it, I actually liked it best when I took 10mg with breakfast and then another 10mg at lunch. To me, it definitely felt better than taking it all at once, even though it doesn't make any sense. Perhaps maybe it's the fluoxetine itself that I like, but its metabolite norfluoxetine is a bit different. Don't know.

Woolav when I tried prozac when it first came out. i found it so stimulating that I had to quit. If I'm wrong please correct me but aren't you bipolar and suffer from manias? Wonder why you doctor would try prozac? Fondly, Phillipa

Hi woolav,

thought I'd just throw this out in case it might help in the future...

My daughter was on a low dose of Prozac for a few months, about 5 years ago (19 yrs. old at the time) for a serious (but thank God, brief) depressive episode, including some suicidal thoughts. It worked really well for the depression, but she was EXTREMELY sensitive to it, to the point it made her feel sedated, numb and bizarre (her words) at 20 mg. So, the pdoc had her break open the capsule and divide the contents each day. She took half in a glass of o.j. each morning, the other half at night, but ONLY if she felt really bad.

10 mg. a day was all she could usually tolerate b/c of the side effects. Of course, that's not usually even a therapeutic dose, although it was for her, and I'm not advocating doing this without checking with your pdoc.

Just something to consider, if necessary.

BTW, I was also on Prozac for 2 years, and I took my 20 mg. each morning. I guess my experience won't help much as to timing, as I really didn't have any s/e after the first 4-6 weeks - just good depression relief. It did make me a little tired at first, so pdoc said take it at night if you like, but that s/e wore off so it didn't matter.

Thanks for your responses.
for philipa, yes i have bp2, but it seems without the prozac i was feeling really bad..
it was like the mood stabelizers alone wasnt working. once the prozac got out of my system, about 5 wks, i began feeling really strange. withdrawn, more anxious, less confident etc. so i started back. I had stopped taking it on my own accord, but i know my pdoc didnt want me to stop at all...
so i dont know. i guess if it works for me i need it...and i decided to take it the AM for now. if i do get sleepy, i will change it to night time.
