Shoud I participate in this 2ble-blind study?

Posted by Girlnterrupted on November 10, 2005, at 15:07:50

I went for an interview for a double-blind study on depression. They're going to take me off my current Ad and put me either on Zoloft, Prozac or Paxil.

Then they'll add Abilify to see if it works as an addition to an FDA approved AD.
They're going to take me off my beloved Adderall. I'm kind of scared of that, because if right now I'm basically in a semi-vegetative state, without the adderall I might become a full vegetable.

Would anyone try this combination of AD + Abilify, minus the stimulant?

Thanx.

If you're in that bad of shape it's worth a try. I believe abilify is supposed to be stimulating. Fondly, Phillipa

If it's the one I saw on clinicaltrials.gov, there's a placebo group in it. That is, you could end up with only an AD and no Abilify. I don't know if that would apply for the whole period, but if so, 3 months on an AD that's already failed you is a long time.

Would your current pdoc be willing to try adding an atypical AP to your current AD or one of those in the study? He/she could, if willing. I know nothing about Adderall + AP, if that's possible.

Generally, except for civic duty, I think there isn't much to be gained from participating in a placebo-controlled trial if the meds being studied are already available from your own doctor (or another one up the street). Three months is a long time.

I agree with pseudoname. Why join a study that`s using already approved drugs available from your local pharmacy. The only advantage is financial, but if you get the placebo you`re out of luck. Cecilia

Hi,

The only reason to do this would be financial.

Otherwise you could go to a pdoc and get any of those drugs in any combination with any doses, and still be able to take your stimulant if you need to.

Finances are a good reason though if you can't find a doctor with a good stock of samples.

Sorry, but uless you have to have the cash (which a lot ofus on PB need ) I would def stick with the combo you are on and do your best to wait for a truly unique medicine that is or might be coming down the pipeline . Why mess what makes you half way functional. Thats just my 2 cents. Good Luck

I agree with what most others have said...what if you get stuck with a placebo?

If you want to try abilify and cost is a problem, you could always start by getting 10mg pills and cut them into 4 quarters and dose just 2.5mg to start. Later on if you like it and go to a higher dose, just get larger pills and cut them to size. That way you can get 2 to 4 days worth of meds out of one pill.

With abilify, most people have a period of one to two weeks of side effects to get through. But usually in the 3 days to 3 weeks timeframe, they know whether it is helping them feel better or not. Why go through a long clinical trial when you could find out for yourself in less than 3 weeks, and keep all your favorite meds at the same time?
