Hi,
I sometimes take amitriptyline to help me sleep.
It's normally best to start amitriptyline at a very low dose and increase gradually. 25mg is probably a bit excessive for a starting dose, it might make you feel groggy.
Try cutting a 25mg tablet into 4 pieces using a tablet cutter or nail scissors. Take 1/4 of a tablet at about 9.30pm. Increase the dose gradually as required.
Final doses for amitriptyline vary widely. Some people take as little as 5mg/day, others as much as 200mg. Personally, I take 25mg at night.

Hi. I would take Ed's suggestion re. the dosage. I had pdoc prescribe it for me and I couldn't get past 10 mg. He want me at 100 mg along with my prozac. I kept the pills and used them when I needed to sleep. They knock most people out.
Actually I had a dog that was prescribed it because she had anxiety when she got older. She would start to panic when she saw us getting ready to leave the house. She had to take 10 mg! Worked like a charm. (I'm not comparing you to a dog)

I take trazodone, mirtazapine and zyprexa sometimes for sleep. Maybe amitriptyline could be good because the last two knocks me out and I sleep until twelve o'clock...

yes, zolpidem (Stilnox)seems to be a very often used med. But why not try something else (cheaper)? Does it work with low dosage amitriptyline, you dont sleep until twelve o'clock midday lunchtime and when do you take it?

Amitriptyline is much more likely to cause a 'hangover' than zolpidem. Nevertheless, I don't have a problem unless I take more than 25mg. I take it at about 9pm. I get up at about 7.15am to get ready for work.
I took 5mg amitriptyline on the first night, then 10mg, then 20mg, then 25mg. I can't take more than 25mg because it makes me feel tired during the day.
As a sleep aid, amitriptyline is not as effective as mirtazapine.

I don't always have trouble sleeping, just sometimes. I often find it difficult to fall asleep early enough. I need to go to bed quite early because I get up early. I don't take amitriptyline every day.

mirtazapine knocks you out "normally" in approx. 3-4h in the smallest dosage and you sleep until midday...in long term use and higher dosages when it hits noradrenaline transmission this will disappear. Sleeping until midday would be good...but you cant :-( Interestingly during night I am much more active when possible, I think even my brain seems to be running better.

I can also get up but I need some coffee and its pretty hard. I actually like the potent histamine1-antagonist sleep inducing properties of mirtazapine. It's a good sleep. But unfortunately the half-life is long and after one single dosage of approx. 1mg I will still eat chocolate, cheese...for two days!

When I take approx. 1mg 8pm its not a bad sleep drug. It even lowers cortisol but I dont know if it really does with this low dosage. Sometimes I eat too less, mirtazapine isnt bad though. I take it only occasionally. If I would take it permanetly I would gain weight of course! When I took it over a week I ate like hell from vanille cream to gorgonzola pizza, chocolate and and...I certainly would gain weight! However I think its an interesting drug...maybe I would give that to persons with anorexia nervosa.
Apart from low dosage pharmacology I try to exercise in summer I like swimming in a small lake (am I the least romantic?) in winter times i prefer a hometrainer. I have to kick my ....to do that.
I have never taken diphenhydramine. What is it?
Overall I like the late summer but know its going to be cold especially in the morning brrrr.

It's a sedating antihistamine. Some people find it helpful for sleep. You can buy it without a prescription in the UK.

hmm i forgot. this is used for local anaesthesia. But normally replaced. But as ever you can use these med for other things. Good idea...
