Modafinil tolerence + augmentation

Posted by tecknohed on October 7, 2005, at 2:39:34

I've been very impressed with modafinil so far. However I read many accounts of tolerence and poop out. So I have these questions:

Can modafinil itself be augmented?

Is there a cross-tolerence with Adrafinil, the other 'good arousal' med? ie, if a tolerence of modafinil built, would adrafinil have a 'fresh' effect?

Also, I'm considering adding Taurine to my mixture (Phenelzine + Modafinil + Taurine) to help with the slight tensness I can with the modafinil. Any thoughts?

I doubt theres much data on these subjects but any theories or thoughts appreciated.

Cheers.

Just anecdotal here, but I've been on Provigil for most of the past two years, and it's still helping me. No sign of poop-out. While I still need a nap daily, it brightens my mood considerably. In fact, for a while it was the only med I was on, and it was *almost* enough to keep me going.

Hope that helps.

I'm glad you say that! I've been on modafinil now for 4/5 days and its kept me wide awake, until today!

Today I fell asleep around 4:30pm and awoke 2 hours later. Thing is, I took 100mg modafinil at 3pm (+ 30mg Nardil) AND I felt it take effect, but I still slept!?

Since starting, I've had a lot less sleep, about 5 hours a night. Now this is great! The less I have the better I function, though I must still have 'some' sleep. I woke up at 4am today. Also, the sedation from the Nardil is what made me choose modafinil in the first place. Now combine the Nardil sedation and haveing less sleep than normal, and it seems no surprise that I fell asleep. But isn't the modafinil supposed to work in this exact type of situation? And considering the fact that I DID actually feel it take effect but still fell asleep shortly afterwards? Whats going on there!? I'm baffled.

It might help to miss my 30mgNardil midday dose and add it to my morning and evening doses instead. I'll also try to get a bit more sleep.

Maybe I shouldn't expect 'miracles'. After all, I feel pretty good at the mo. And reading that its still working for you despite you still needing a daily nap makes me feel better about it.

I just read a study that says you really need eight hours sleep to remain healthy. But the nap may make it harder for you to sleep at night. Fondly, Phillipa

Thanks Phillipa.

8 hours seems ok. Problem is my sleep pattern is always all over the place. I love haveing little sleep, I seem to function better. And a short nap is fine but not every day. It means things dont get done. And like you say, falling asleep can become difficult.

I definitely have a sleep disorder but never been diagnosed. I've always found it highly and unusually difficult to wake up in the morning, since being a toddler. Maybe I should research more and try to get tested, if such tests exist.

Kind regards
Kev.

How old are you? Sleep patterns change over time, and what you're describing sounds as though you might be, roughly, early 20s? If so, your sleep patterns are likely to change pretty radically over hte next few years, towards earlier sleeping and rising.

As for the feeling better from less sleep, though, that sounds like me -- I feel *much* better and more capable when I haven't eaten. That's a big part of anorexia for me. When I don't sleep, I get to feeling kinda speedy, which is maybe akin to what you're describing? It's not a good thing, no matter how good it may feel. You'll be doing yourself a favor by working to get that full 8 hours. You just might find that you're not quite as capable as you thought when you're going without sleep.

Just a few thoughts...

Do you snore? That could keep you awake or wake you up. And you could have sleep studies done. Fondly, Phillipa

Yes I do sometimes snore. And only when I take Nardil. When I recently had a brake from it, my partner was relieved she could get a good nights sleep! lol
But doctors already know this and say nothing can be done because its caused by a med. All they've done is give me nasal sprays and told me to sleep on my side.

I think the snoring might be going now though, I'll have to ask my partner. lol

Teck.

Oh she'll know alright! My husband snores and has periods of aphnea. But he won't see a doctor. I push him over on his side and then he gets angy. And then I'm wide awake. Fondly, Phillia
