Do generic drugs work as good as the brand name? I take generic paxil and it seems not to be working as good as regular paxil. Are generics less potent ?

I feel that same way about my wellbutrin. I started on the samples from the doc and that seemed okay. Then when they filled my presciption it was generic and I've been feeling horrible and been itching like crazy. My doc says shes start me back on name brand Monday.

It depends. Many generics do not work as well as brand. They need to have the same amount of active ingredients but this doesn't translate to same efficacy. In some cases different generics are different. A good example is dexedrine extended release, where the Barr generic is known to be less effective than the brand or the Malckenrodt(sp?) generic

I do not believe that generic drugs work the same although pharmacists have told me there is no diff.. There has to be a diff. somewhere though?! I know that Klonopin works much better for me than Clomzeapam.

From what I understand the difference is in the fillers. And to comply with FDA standards a generic can vary by 20% Fondly, Phillipa

Some generics are made by the brand company. Watson gets Buproprion SR that is manufactured by Penn Labs, which is directly linked to GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Wellbutrin. (A pharmacist confirmed this, as does the info. at the link below). Sometimes you have to follow the trail quite a ways to get back to the brand company.

I forgot to mention: To get started look for small print on the actual bottle labels (not pharmacy labels) that say "Mfd. by:". It may be hard to get your hands on an actual bottle label.
In my case the Watson bottle said Mfd by Penn Labs, which I traced to GSK.

I am currently on Effexor XR 150 mg and my doc just prescribed 10 mg of Prozac on top of it. YEA! When I went to fill the perscription they gave me the generic brand (Fluoxetine). When I asked about it I was told that it is the same thing. Has anyone ever taken the generic form of Prozac? Did it work for you? The pharmacy was out of Prozac for the time being. Funny how they just assume you will except the generic brand.

With Prozac having such a long half life, I think generic would be okay. I think where you run into problem with generics is when you try an AD with a short half life, because if the generic is weaker, it will cause problems.
