?! WeLlBuTrIn XL for PaNiC ?!

Posted by maddy4 on September 22, 2005, at 11:49:44

so they called me in wellbutrin XL for panic. i am not depressed - just have anxiety abt panic attacks and this is what they thought i should take instead of the lexapro that made me 'trip' (on it for two days and stopped). i keep reading that wellbutrin doesnt work on panic though - or makes people panicky. good part is the lexapro had me smoking again - and the wellbutrin should help me go back to being smoke free. THOUGHTS? anyone tried it for panic? i might not take it. THANKS!!!

correction - think it was wellbutrin SR (nm)

That seems like an odd choice for someone w/ panic probs. This is an OB right? At one point WB gave me panic attacks (I don't usually have them). Although, on the bright side, WB is sort of a "fun" drug
(I know that sounds bad). At first it made me giddy. After a while it just made me a little hyper, but in a way that I enjoyed.

You can try it and if the panic attacks get worse, stop taking it.

Best,
EE

yep - this was my OB...should i partake? actually feeling quite good today coming off the 2 days of lex and had 1/4 of a .25 xanax for anxiety.

maybe i should just do xanax as needed.

i like that wellbutrin gives energy and is 'fun'! lol - good to know incase i fill the rx. am worried b.c you cant cut the WB in half and i am - as ive said- majorly drug sensitive! who else can get by on 1/4 of the lowest mg of xan!?

Yes, I would question the use of wellbutrin in panic/anxiety prone individuals.

I have panic attacks as well- been on Lexapro (and oddly enough, made me "trip" as well), and also Wellbutrin.

Wellbutrin made my anxiety 100 times worse. It made me agrophobic for the first time in my life. Almost a bit "paranoid."
I couldn't sleep or eat for four entire days. It was a nightmare.

I would not take Wellbutrin if you are prone to anxiety or panic attacks. That's the wrong choice, IMO.

the wellbutrin only really messed with my anxiety a few times and the xanex got me through it, and I had more anxiety than depression. HOWEVER, now I'm dealing with my depression. I'm not used to that and don't know when things will get better. I'll try to keep you updated but it's been over 2 weeks and still nothing.

I keep an online blog, feel free to visit it and see my progress (if i ever have any) and thoughts.

(((hugs to you))) and hoping you find your solution.

It's supposed to be related to diethylpropion (Tenuate), which is terrible stuff, hard to handle and unrewarding.
Need to be young and healthy to cope with it.

so today have been google-ing wellbutrin + panic at length - have found mostly that it is no good for panic but have found some success stories as well.

i like the fact that their are no sexual SEs and mostly love that there is no weight gain.

looks like at first you can combat the panic SE w/ a benzo. maybe not a road i want to go down.

still battling whether or not i should do an antiD or not.

here is my deal: have had prob 8-10 panic attacks in my life - but do have fear of another panic attack - esp. right after one. so a lingering anxiety for awhile - but then normalcy. but then unexpectedly - BOOM a panic attack. i am not normal - but def. not totally effed up. so really DONT KNOW!

must admit - again - was loving today - coming of 2 days of lex w/ a bit of xan felt great. makes me want to experiment. would love to KNOW i wouldnt ever have a panic attack - instead of living in fear some of the time.

but as is... maybe just benzo and wine as needed is my ticket. dont know.

OTOH, DH is majorly depressed - thinking of giving him my WB scrip.

life is grand :)

You haven't taken Tenuate? It's one of those noneuphoric diet pills that we are allowed to easily get hold of. I persisted taking Tenuate, phentermine etc etc, because they made me feel a little better, even though they were rough as guts. (They make you feel really tense and overstimulated). But I've learned my lesson and don't look for things like that to make me feel better. Basically I think that if you can easily get hold of it from a doctor then it's not worth taking. This sounds antisocial and strange, yet is nonetheless widely understood.

nope - never taken tenuate - never even heard of it - and never took phentermine - did hear of that though.

ive never taken diet drugs - i am thin - want to stay that way - thats why always posting abt how scared to take anything that would make me gain weight.

...but do understand wanting that speedy effect for feel good purposes - have def. done coke - YEARS ago - so know what you mean if its on that amphetamine level.

so you think WB has an amphetamine-like feel about it? i would def. think that would not be answer to panic - but at same time thats what they give for ADD.

in some sense scared to take ANYTHING b.c would miss my agitation...i like having nervous energy - just not panic.

Okay, I sense that this is not what you want to hear, but I really have to say it again (then I won't say it again, okay?) I *really* think that short-term psychotherapy would be a faster, safer, lasting, side-effect free way to address your problems. The symptoms that you describe are the type that respond so well to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Seriously, like 8 sessions would probably be enough. That's just 8 hrs of your time. If you have medical insurance, it often will cover it. You have only had a few panic attacks so far--it is the perfect time to learn some tools to keep them under control.

You have a lot of mis-givings about meds. Maybe you need to listen to them and try something else first. Just give it some thought.

Best,
EE

P.S. I tend to be very pro-med. I'm often trying to get people to take meds rather than stop them.
P.P.S. I'm also very pro-therapy. I'm training to be a psychologist, so I'm a little biased. (Now I've come clean!)
