UK Mental health care 'suffers gaps' ....

Posted by Meri-Tuuli on September 12, 2005, at 6:18:35

Hmmmm......not sure I know of anyone who is satisfied with UK mental heatlhcare....but still.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4229156.stm

(see above link for full article)

'Anna Walker, chief executive of the watchdog, said: "This survey shows people who use mental health services have a lot of praise for the doctors, nurses and other specialist staff providing their care.'

I think Anna Walker is clearly delusional. LOL ;o)

And more to the point, where did they get these people?

'nine in 10 trusted their psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse.'

I certainly don't trust mine! Although I've never seen a pdoc. Hmmm not sure I would trust the CPN I saw in terms of medication etc, although I'm sure I would trust him to say, pay back a tenner I leant him.

What do other Pbabblers think - are you happy with UK mental healthcare provision????

I for one, am not, but thats my opinion. Maybe I'm the not satisfied 10%....

In a word: no. As far as I can tell, if you're not psychotic they're just not interested.

ditto.

You would think, for something that reportly effects one in four of us, the UK mental healthcare system would be top priority or something. But it isn't. I was thinking, how do my doctors know I'm not bipolar or something? They don't! THEY'VE NEVER ASKED.

Sigh................................

I hope you're doing okay Ed.....

That's hard to believe that if someone is psychotic they don't treat you. If someone is what happens to them? Fondly, Phillipa

Hey Philipa! How are you doing? Its nice to see some familar names!!

>In a word: no. As far as I can tell, if you're not psychotic they're just not interested

I Ed was trying to say that pdocs etc here are NOT interested in you if you AREN't pyschotic, ie. for those of us who are depressives, OCDers, GAD etc etc they don't care, unless we show pschotic tendancies.

GGreat huh.

UK Mental health care suffers gaps....Just a bit!

Hey Meri and Ed

Where did they dig up these satified people from?!

'nine in 10 trusted their psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse.'
This is depressing news : (

I suppose these people blindly trust their doctors, and are greatful for any help they recieve.
If you don't know things could be better you won't complain!

I have to say my experience of UK mental health care beyond the GP level has been bad.
There are a few good psychiatrists out there, but they are few and far between.

To put things in perspective there was a UK guy who used to post here,I think his name was McPac.
He'd travelled around the world to get treatment so he had some perspective.
He said (if I remember correctly) "UK Pdocs are the worst in the world"!

Another quote on UK Pdocs, "Their arrogance is only matched by their ignorance"!

Sorry to be so negative, these qotes probably are excessive, still I think their room for improvement in the UK system.

Sorry that was a bit negative!

I'm really tired and its making me a bit negative

There are UK people who've had genuinly good experiences with their docs, like Technohed.

yes generally.

I fall into the psychotic category!
I would say that before my hospital admission my care was much more patchy. My wife going ballistic on the CMHT about how poor the care I was getting was may have also helped.

I agree entirely with you, that's why my psych is an American.
I saw enough English psychiatrists to work out that they were generally very poor.
I now work with them sometimes and they are no better, they just are not up to date, do not listen and prescribe using a kind of lottery system.

Ps the American sorted me in one session !!

Your not wrong!

You don't have your babblemail switched on so I'm trying to contact you on this thread.

Inspired by yourself and others I've more or less made up my mind to go abroad for treatment.
To the US, Cannada or Australia.

May I ask what the name of the doctor your seeing in the US is?
(feel free not to tell me if you don't want to)

Can I also ask how you found a US doc who was willing to treat you?
What did you do about accomidation?

Also is there list of reputable US docs?

Tom,

What condition? There are literally psychiatrists onb every street corner in New York. Some of the best in the world, and some crackpots. Do you want someone who does just medication or therapy too? A specialist in a particular area? Someone who does research / has a hospital affiliation? Black/white/female/gay/disabled/ ...

Hi Ed!

> Nice holiday?

was alright, there was nothing to do except sunbathe and Im not really all into sunbathing!

> How did you cope with the flight?

Not too bad atall which I was really pleased about. I can tolerate 30mg+ of pericyazine no problem now and I think at this dose I am getting some useful antianxiety effect. Also I took 10mg of diazepam and I think I felt something from it! One the morning we were leaving my anxiety was ramping up but about an hour after I took the diazepam it came down again and I felt alot calmer. To be honest I have never experienced that before and I wonder if thats what a benzo working feels like. The only thing I can think is that pericyazine has some how helped the diazepam to work. Or its a placebo. Or my anxiety would have come down anyways. Either way I dont care, I got there without too much pain and that was great.

Best regards, Bunny

Hi Tom,

My doc is Dr Martin T Jensen , try

www.drjensen.com

he is purely a psychopharmcologist, ie just deals with drugs.

For a broader approach you could try Dr Amen at the Amen clinic , though it will be more expensive.

Cost £400 for flight and 3 days accomodation ( winter time !) and $250.00 - that is dollars for a very thorough 2 hour consultation - and a cure!!!

It might also be worth asking our American friends for recommendations as there are, I am sure, many others I am simply not aware of.

I am not sure Jensens system is for everyone, but he is private , so if he was useless he would be out of business by now.
Unlike our lot who can be awful, average or good ( well there may be a couple somewhere !)and still get paid - can you think of any other place where a GP would be the countrys biggest mass murderer ?

Good Luck

Glenn

Thanks Glenn!

Its crazy the way UK docs get paid, or promoted regardless of how useless they are!
