nardil problems - wtihdrawal, etc.

Posted by jhm on August 3, 2005, at 17:24:54

Nardil worked well for me for a few years but side effects and dietary restrictions were bothersome. As I titrated off 90mg over a period of a few months I became manic (I had never before experienced mania or even hypomania). Has anyone ever heard of MAOI withdrawal triggering a manic episode?

Also I believe I developed a vitamin B6 deficiency in the months before I went off Nardil (I had cracking at the corners of my mouth characteristic of a deficiency). At the same time I developed dark spots and later indentations on my front teeth as well as others. Perhaps this was from the vitamin B6 deficiency. Has anyone ever heard of damage to teeth occuring because of MAOI usage?

Hi jhm.

I too believe I had B6 difficiency whilst on Nardil. I took B6 from the very beginning but one day, after about 8 months I ran out and didn't bother buying any more. Then after a while I started to get very numb fingers to the point that I could prick them with a pin and feel nothing. I didn't see the connection at first, but remembered that B6 deficiency can cause numbness in the extremeties, and even peripheral neuropathy.

So I started taking B6 again (100mg/day) and it did indeed dissapear.

I couldn't convince my Doc mind you!

Kev.

Since B6 is involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, would a Nardil induced deficiency contribute to poopout?
Any ideas?

i've seen this idea proposed before on here, and i think it makes perfect sense for the answer to your question to be "yes." (Though i don't know of any research to back this idea up).
i'd really like to know to what exent this could be the case though, and to what extent B6 supplementation could help prevent Nardil poopout and sustain all its positive effects.

Perhaps. 10mg pyridoxine/day would be sufficient to prevent a deficiency.

Yes. MAOI withdrawal can trigger mania.
