Hoping my sleep doc will Rx Xyrem for insomnia

Posted by jerrympls on June 29, 2005, at 17:13:57

...for my insomnia. I've been on EVERYTHING. The sleep clinic I go to is one of the best in the US. Hopefully the doctors are not conservative....

That's good that you've found a good sleep clinic. My clinic wanted me to do a sleep study to get more information to determine if I'm a candidate for Xyrem. Have you done a sleep study?

best of luck ~ Jake

My study showed a mild case of obstructive sleep apnea, and I was prescribed a CPAP. It hasn't been going well so far with the CPAP because I'm such a light sleeper. I'm going back in two weeks for a follow-up but I'm wondering if Xyrem may be contraindicated since it supposedly depresess respiration. Any thoughts? thanks.
ps. my clinic does dispense xyrem to lots of people.

best regards ~Jake

Zyrem only gives 3-4 hours sleep 2x a night. Have you given up on trying Seconal or Tuinal or something else Jer? I thought you had the BEST sleep from a Barbiturate?

I'm worried about havint to use a CPAP because I have a deviated septum and chronic nasal congestion. Can they fix that? My brother had some procedure done where they routed (sp?) out his entire nasal cavity - including his nostrils. Do they remove excess tissue or.....?

Xyrem (ghb) is poured into acholol, which has always been a contradiction aganist its use, doing this causes extreme sedation and possably one to pass out.

Alchlol is the factor,in the same way some cruhed benzos mixed or just about any other strong sedative mixed inside a drink can cause someone to pass out.

Roofies,a mickey, whatever have you alcholol is the culprit.

I hope it comes as know surprise the xyrem was banned as a legal substance, something that requires a procedure,UNLESS you present it as an IMMEDIATE danger, hence the "date rape drug"

Oddly as the substance was banned oprhan encrouged by the FDA began its work with getting it to be a prescription medication.

Xyrem was never very popular, most people still want know what ur talking about unless u say the date rape drug, then youll get the OHH yeah i know that.So it wasnt like the substance was becomming some evil epidemic in date rape.

A lot of people "cap" one of the ingredients of ghb, which seems to be more addictiong and more hard hitting.Aside from that many many people used xyrem before its ban saftly for everything from anxeity&depression,to just about every kind of sleep problem,as well as for its sexual benifits which do NOT include passing out,i mean instead its affect one male and female orgasm intensity.

There were already to legal prescription forms of xyrem in europe long before xyrem was thought of,alcover and gamma-oh which were used for alholol withdrawal, they were banned along with ghbs ban,of course we allowed xyrem.

Unless anyone has read real information on this chemical, its chemistry, and the fact that it can provide one of the deepest restoritve sleep stages than any other substance drug or not, then you will hear the same thing over and over about its date rape use.

It works very similar to ur gaba meds on the market.Unlike alcholol which leaves ur liver in a toxic state, ghb is metbolized to h2o as it passes ur liver. It has an affect on increasing gaba,as well as dopamine and serotonion NATURALLY.

If ghb was a posion,it would not be a script med,no matter how useful it seemed for a condition.

Lastly benzos and barb are believed not to put u in the restortive sleep stage, whether this is true or not i dont know, but i do know its true og xyrem.

In small doses that dont create a "high" ghb works like a benzo and its a shame how many people could be using it in conjunction with there medication today.

Its a shame.

The technician who fitted my CPAP had surgery done to improve breathing through the nasal passages. As far as I know the recommended treatment depends on the results of sleep study and/or physical exam. If airway obstructions are causing significant arousals, they will likely first try a CPAP. A CPAP will often help people who are chronically congested. Surgery is a secondary option for OSA. If your're breathing and O2 levels are OK, then the approach is focused toward insomnia. Xyrem is used a lot at my clinic for those who can't get into delta sleep and especially if you have fibromyalgia. I'm not sure how much they use barbituates. I've had many nights in which I sure could have used something like seconal. A lot of the sleeping pills handed out thise days aren't much better than taking a shot of whiskey. -

Hi Jerry
I had my snout routed. They burn off a layer of tissue right up to around your sinuses. Very smelly, and then a scab has to form before you can blow out a cast of your nasal passages. It's supposed to enlarge the breathable volume, I guess. It's as good as anything else, which isn't saying a lot.

I said nothing about a date rape drug. Implying that I want a date rape drug suggests I want to use it for that reason. I'd certainly take a barbituate over Xyrem - but doctors are so phobic when it comes to these kind of meds.

As far as I'm concerned, alcohol is a date rape drug. Going around spouting off that Xyrem is a date rape drug is just what the media wants.

They came in in the middle of the night during my sleep study and put a CPAP on me but had to take it off because I couldn't breathe through my nose. So, I'm confused as to how a CPAP is supposed to help with congestion?

You have a local anaesthetic, so it doesn't hurt, but is unpleasant, which is to be expected.

To begin with, for the 3 weeks or so until you blow out the scab, congestion is worse, and during this time you can't use either steroid or decongestant nasal sprays. After the scab is out so to speak, congestion is better. I wonder if people who have sinus type conditions might not do so well as those who have rhinitis. It does enlarge the breathing passages a bit.

I've actually had more help from antiallergic herbs like baicall skullcap and albizzia. I have a high IgE. But you have to take them all the time.

Of course Alcohol is the main date rape drug! always has been-I was just parlaying the media hype of GHB, it has medical uses i'm sure.

You said you had the best sleep on Nembutal, so thats why i mentioned Barbiturates, I may wonder if anything else your taking might be causing your sleep issues?

They don't always help. I'm wondering, did they give you the results from the sleep test, i.e. a diagnosis, and a recommended treatment?

My report was very detailed, it gave a Apnea Hypopnea Index of 10.5. Also showed my sleep efficiency at 41%. (I slept for 41% of the time I was in bed).

Based on that, he recommending trying a cpap for a couple of weeks. I go back soon to seen what else can be tried if the cpap has no positive effect (i.e. removing some drugs, adding others).

kind regards ~Jake
