Posted by rjlockhart98 on May 31, 2005, at 21:24:46

I just wanted to know what there was before the holy "SSRI".

Where doctors more at ease with them back then?

What benzo did you take 80's, well any time period.

Matt, Did you get my E-mail? In the 80's I took low dose valium. TCA's were popular then also. Fondly, Phillipa

yes I was taking valium then I think, or Oxazepam. Before that I was on Librium. They also tried me on Ativan which seemed to be a placebo. Before SSRIs I used also to take tricyclic antideps, principally Dothiepin (Prothiaden). Also several awful excursons into antipsychotics old-style (Stelazine, Pericyazine, Chlorpromazine)

Too right they were. Here came the new thing. Nonaddictive, impossible to overdose on, and selective for anxiety as opposed to sedation. The comparison was with the barbiturates. Hundreds at a time. Quite harmless (almost). You could become dependant on them, but only "psychologically". Maybe the pdrs were just happy to have something to give their patients.

the late 1970s were the heyday for Valium etc benzos with around 80 million perscriptions annually written, USA before the Valium backlash, with movies like 1981s "im dancing as fast as i can" which helped to demonise Valium-featuring Jill Clayberg overdosing on Valium then suddenly quitting-sending her into a manic state.

Perscriptions then began to fall with Benzos becoming semi-controlled drugs C1V USA and class C NZ in 1999, dramatically cutting their numbers and sending SSRIs soaring

Hi Ed,

I got some Stelazine a frend threw my way after she didn't want them anymore, she gave up on APs and went onto Methadone for her Schrizophrenia, which has worked better than all previous psych pills.

They are blue 5mg Stelazine and i take 1 now and then when the sh*t hits the fan-so to speak. I guess they cause some depression and general low mood, but iv never really taken 1 when iv been feeling ok so who knows-not really a fun pill to play around with, considering the SEs.

Cheers

Hi P!

Do you take Stelazine for anxiety? 5mg is a lot for anxiety, a quarter of a pill might be sufficient with less side effects.

Kind regards,
Ed.

I sometimes take what i was given by a friend for anxiety. I know 6mgs is considered the MAX for office patients 5mg pills are more for Psychosis states i know. sometimes only a half. I don't take it often, but its good to know i got it for rough times, instead of feeling like i would have to go to the ER or something.

I take Valium for anxiety, and ritalin helps, believe it or not? often ritalin 20-30mgs has sent me off to sleep when 10mgs of Valium has done nothing-weird i know but it warms up my frontal cortex and gives a safe cozy feeling-like being kissed goodnight by yr mum when you were 10!! snug in bed while it rains outside!!

Inner restlessness and exhaustion, pacing up and down the stairs, puffy eyes, restless legs. Akathisia I think they call it. I still get it. I wonder if any permanent damage was done

Yes, been there, done that! I don't like chlorpromazine!

Xanax was handed out like candy back in the 1980's before Prozac. I was Rx'ed up to 6 mg a day at one point.

Now you have to beg a pdoc if you have GAD or insomnia that only Xanax treats well enough.
