Adding an AD to Adderall

Posted by sitanyc on May 21, 2005, at 13:42:47

Hi. Thanks in advance for reading this, and offering any experience you may have here. I've been recently diagnosed with ADD (formerly misdiagnosed with bipolar), and have severe anxiety-irritability issues, which Adderall has been helping (5mg twice a day). But I know I'm still depressed, and am wondering if anyone has a successful cocktail experience here. I'm pretty sure my doctor is going to either add Wellbutrin to the Adderall or put me on Wellbutrin altogether, but I've found some helpful info here so far so I thought I'd ask.

hey! I did the anti-depressant+mood-stabilizer+adderall thing, and it worked pretty well. The upshot of mixing an anti-depressant with adderall is that, in theory at least, a stimulant+anti-depressant will work better for depression and maybe ADD than using just one of them alone. I personally took Tofranil-PM, which is a slightly re-formulated tricyclic (read: old-school) anti-depressant. The major downside of this combo was that tricyclics are kinda rough the first week or so. The upshot is that tricyclics and stimulants (particularly amphetamines like dexedrine or adderall) kind of play off each other, so the anti-depressant works a little faster and little better and the stimulant has a little more "oomph". You also run the risk of cardiovascular side-effects and fevers, though. If you're having anxiety and depression, Wellbutrin wouldn't be my first choice. Personally, I'd try zoloft OR a dual-reuptake inhibitor, like cymbalta or effexor. You might also want to look into BuSpar, which can add some oomph to anti-depressants that work on serotonin. Good luck.

Hi. I wouldn't combine Wellbutrin with a stimulant. You will get too much "BANG!", I think. I could be wrong. Wellbutrin is very stimulating.

I would try an SSRI or a tricyclic. Probably a SSRI because Tricyclics have some unpleasant side effects. Maybe Prozac or Zoloft?

About 10 years ago I was on Zoloft for 2 years. It stopped working for me, and I hated the sexual SE.

I know Wellbutrin can be effective on its own for ADD. Perhaps I should try it on its own?
