Will adding another med, help my depression?

Posted by woolav on May 19, 2005, at 17:49:21

After coming off my hypomanic episodes in march, i have been depressed (what a surprise) anyway, and as you prob. already know, my pdoc has just added trileptal to my mix. I am wondering if that will help my depression. I understand its a mood stabelizer, but I wonder if it will stop the depression along with the hypo......

Hi,

What is your current "mix". I found Trileptal to be comparable but slightly less effective than Depakote. I need to augment these drugs with an ssri for maximum effectiveness balancing depression and mood swings. I am a firm believer in 2 out of the original "Big 3" AED's for controlling mania. The minus being Dilantin. It effects too many neurotransmitters and causes definite excitability, confusion and anxiety which usually runs parallel with BP. Good Luck

It will even you out, but it has not antidepressant properties. So in the long run you may feel less depressed but it will take some time.

my med combo now is 300mg lamictal, 20 mg prozac and 3 mg of klonopin. I guess I will be adding (at first) 150mg of trileptal and increase it from there....Im hoping this will work...

It's not a high dose. As I said I took l50mg of trileptal and had no side effects. I hope it works well for you! Fondly, Phillipa

S,

That's a good combination IMO although I dislike Lamictal. Other people swear by it. Starting Trileptal at 150mg is smart. I did that for a week then to 300 for a week then 450 for a week 600 for a week then 900 for a few months. In my experience with it the side effects were minimal. Started with a slight transient headache with mild heartburn, then some mild cognitive impairment along with occasional incoordination and slurred speech. They subsided after a few weeks. Trileptal is definitely my second choice to Depakote.

Hi Nixon,

Are you returning to Depakote??? I'm pleased to hear that Trileptal was ok, I was a bit worried because you didn't post for ages!

Kind regards,
Ed.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for asking I have been fine. The Trileptal trial lasted about 3 months. I consider it to be a top line 2nd choice to Depakote for mania. No question. I decide to return to Depakote because for me it is slightly more effective at low doses(500mg per day) in conjuction with a low dose benzo(Librium). I did not feel compelled to post because after my stint I realized there were more than enough well informed people(you at the top) on this sight that I really was'nt needed. I'll be around. Your friend, John
