AD - SRI's -- do they cause apathy?

Posted by Interested on May 14, 2005, at 15:44:54

Do SRI's (Cymbalta, Prozac, etc.) cause apathy?

I've been on Cymbalta about 3 months, and I don't feel depressed, but I don't feel particularly happy or upbeat either. I've taken Prozac in the past.

Do you have a similar reaction?

What kind of side effects to you have when you get off the SRI's?

I get the same thing. Sometimes a medication holliday/ dose reduction/ dopimanerigc augmentation can help.

Thanks, Linkadge. So just taper off and stop for a while, that helps?

I was thinking that maybe I should just take the AD only durng periods of time when I'm really depressed, then when things seem OK, get off of it.

Any thoughts?

Doctors seem to think that the drugs don't work right away.

I notice effects right away, but they are right in that a full effect may take a few weeks.

Oftentimes I have used an AD as needed, more often however with the sedating drugs for sleep.

I find the best thing to do is when you reach a state of apathy simply reduce the dose. This works well for the SSRIs.

If however, apathy was a main componenet of your original depression, then you may need a norepinephrine/dopamine acting drug cause reduction of an SSRI probably won't help the apathy.
