Doctors seem to think that the drugs don't work right away.

I notice effects right away, but they are right in that a full effect may take a few weeks.

Oftentimes I have used an AD as needed, more often however with the sedating drugs for sleep.

I find the best thing to do is when you reach a state of apathy simply reduce the dose. This works well for the SSRIs.

If however, apathy was a main componenet of your original depression, then you may need a norepinephrine/dopamine acting drug cause reduction of an SSRI probably won't help the apathy.
