Luvox, an ssri. it poops out so cognitive therapy is important during the break in ocd symtems. I took it for years and dealt with some of the more pressing symtoms of ocd, now I am better in that area. Depression is always a problem for me. good luck.

I agree. I took Luvox for a while and noticed a decrease in my counting etc., and obsessive behavior. Dumb doc won't Rx it for me now. But I see the pdoc tomorrow and i think I'll ask her as she's new and never rx'd the med for me. Fondly, Phillipa

I'm pure obsessional too. I was on anafranil, which really helped, but many drugs have come around since then.

I'm responding to suggest a great book if you haven't heard of it "the imp of the mind" by Dr. Lee Baer. It's the only book I've ever found that deals exclusively with obsessional ocd.

good luck,

tt

I also agree that Luvox is the best. I take 250 mgs daily and it works great.

From what i have been told by psychatrists and what I have read, Anafranil is the best OCD treatment. Then they say the SSRI's are second to that. Other then that, I have heard that antipsychotics are also helpful in some people with OCD. Take care.

yeah, I got about 3 years of ocd relief out of prozac, at a high dose of 80mg. ocd symptems get much better. Combined with 4 years on 300mg. luvox that was 7 years to realize in therapy how my ocd symptoms could be controlled, now my ocd symptom can be considered eccentricity. the problem is they (SSRI) poop out, ecspecially if you go on again off to many times, years of taking ssri it's hard not to want to take a occasional drug holiday. if you stay on it and never go off your chances of 'poop-out' are greatly reduced. I am trying lexapro now because of the low side effects, as an AD.

If all antidepressants fail, try to add a low dose of at. antipsychotic. It works very well for me.

Do you take most of it at bedtime?

Yup, That's the way my pdoc did it when I was on it. It really worked until he lowered the dose. The first time no sideeffects. Now nothing works. Oh well. Fondly, Phillipa

Anafranil hands down...although it didn't quite do it for me, personally. Luvox is also supposed to be quite helpful in treating OCD for whatever reason, I didn't it all that helpful either. Prozac is right up there as well, as far as the best meds for OCD...had to discontinue that one due to side-effects. If you can sit through the uncomfortable side-effects as you're adjusting to the Anafranil, I'd give that a spin. If that ain't possible, give Prozac a whirl. If you find that one of them works, but isn't fully cutting it...consider adding a LOW dose atypical antipsychotic. Come to think of it, I know several doctors who have successfully added a low dose of Anafranil to Prozac in patients in which the OCD had been completely resistant to treatment.
