hypotension

Posted by xbunny on April 3, 2005, at 18:48:06

I have a problem. Friday night I went to bed late, took my pills as usual. Early saturday morning, about 5 hours later, the postman called with a package I had been expecting. I jumped out bed in some kind of weird state of mind, opened the door and collapsed in the doorway. Somehow I got up and went into the kitchen to get my spare keys and collapsed again. I then got up again went back to the door and collapsed a third time and stayed down I guess. I vaguely remember the postman asking if I was diabetic and if I was alone and then I remember my wife helping me lie down on the sofa. I gather my blackouts where caused by hypotension from my pericyazine and having looked up the symptoms. It seems the ache in the back of my neck and shoulders is also a symptom (I thought my pillows were getting a bit old!), it did make me quite dizzy especially when standing when I started it but I thought it had passed. So I am stuck, my wife is very worried that I might have another blackout when shes not around or that next time I might hurt myself worse, but I dont really want to change the pericyazine as I feel its really doing me good. So any suggestions anyone? please, bunny

Hi Bunny!

We're both up late tonight!

>I gather my blackouts where caused by hypotension from my pericyazine and having looked up the symptoms.

You're probably right, pericyazine is very hypotensive- postural (orthostatic) hypotension is one of the most common side effects. You should still get checked out by your GP though- s/he will need to test for other causes of blackouts.

>So any suggestions anyone?

Always stand up SLOWLY! Hang onto something.

If possible, reduce the pericyazine dose.

Ask your GP for some elastic stockings. Mmm, nice!

Maintain a high fluid intake and eat plenty of salt! Don't increase your salt intake until your GPs diagnosed postural hypotension though. If you don't like salty food, ask for a prescription for 'Slow Sodium' tablets.

If you're desperate, get a prescription for a low dose of fludrocortisone (Florinef).

Regards,
Ed.

I've done the same thing lately (black outs) but mine were due to low blood sugar levels.

Have you had that checked out recently? Sometimes these meds can also affect that.

Be careful! My husband is the same way now, he doesn't want me driving and calls me a zillion times when I'm home without him.

I guess we're blessed to have spouse's that love us!
