Emme -- are you here?

Posted by Sarah T. on March 3, 2005, at 21:08:54

Hi Emme. I've been wanting to ask you about one of your adverse reactions to Celexa. I think you said that you felt very cold on it. I had that experience on Celexa and Lexapro. There are other reasons why I'm unable to tolerate either of those meds, but the constant shivering is one of the more important ones. Did you ever find out what causes this? I'm interested in finding out what causes this problem. Perhaps it would provide a clue to other difficulties I've had as well.

Hi. Yes, I was miserably cold on Celexa. But not on Lexapro. It improved 2-3 days after stopping Celexa. Serotonin is involved in a variety of physiological processes. From what I understand, the 5HT1a receptor is involved in thermoregulation. Maybe others, but my knowledge is limited. If you search on "serotonin receptor* thermoregulation" you'll find a lot. I don't know if Celexa preferentially acts on certain subclasses of receptors. At any rate, the problem is easy to fix by stopping the drug since you can't tolerate it for other reasons anyway.

Hi Emme.

What's going on with memantine?

I stopped taking it.

I have a major family event coming up next week. I found that even 10mg of memantine was causing a blunting of motivation, fatigue, and weakness. I didn't want to take a chance that these things would work against me.

I think I experienced a reduced tolerance to cold while I was taking memantine 20mg.

Hi Scott,

> What's going on with memantine?

Still at 5 mg. The improvement seems to be holding for the moment. I also dropped Lamictal down to 200 mg.

I still have a hint of a depersonalization feeling (e.g. voice sounds strange, etc.). It's not extreme and I'm able to deal with it for now. I don't kinow if I'm adjusting to the memantine or the reduced Lamictal helps, but I'm sleeping less in the daytime and don't feel as weak. I actually feel motivated to do a few more things. Some of the "stupid" feeling is fading. I'm trying to decide if my emotions are detchaed, or simply brought down from overly intense to normal.

As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out b/c so many drugs have not panned out in the past. But it's defintely worth keeping on with it.

Have you tried 5 mg?

I think I'm a little chillier, but it's not nearly as bad as with Celexa, so it's livable for the time being.

I'm sorry the memantine retrial hasn't worked out as you hoped. What's next on your hit parade?

Hi Emme. Thanks very much for this information. It's very interesting. I'll do some PubMed searches on that receptor.
