Effexor XR Release Mechanism...

Posted by gadman on February 7, 2005, at 15:44:16

Does anyone know the Extended Release Mechanism of Effexor XR?

I know it releases slowly by the amount of coating on each one of the beads.... But I am curious as the actual release times...

Is it something like, 2,4,6, and 8 hours after taking dose? Or immediate, 3,6,9,12? Or just Immediate and 4, 8 hours?

I don't know about this one. I found more about it's half life which is that it does the double metabolism trick, so its half-lives are 3-7 hours and 9-13 hours. That means the combined half-life is anywhere from 12-20 hours.

So from what I've read, it metabolizes different things at different times (but with the same dose). It looks like Effexor FIRST begins to work on Seratonin, then later hits norepiphrine.

It claims to take anywhere from two to five days to clear out of your system but people on here having a tough time for weeks.

I'm puzzled by this one..

I'm not sure it works by coating. It may have to do with metabolism. First pass through your liver gives the initial dose of active compound then all subsequent doses take longer due to increased complexity? Now i'm curious, any pharmacists on here?

This is from the Effexor PI sheet. The "not PH dependant" claim I believe means it will diffuse in either the stomach or small intestine.

My question is, "What is the diffusion period"?

<Effexor XR is formulated as an extended-release capsule for once-a-day oral administration.
Drug release is controlled by diffusion through the coating membrane on the spheroids and is not
pH dependent.>
