should i stop all my meds?

Posted by mmcconathy on January 18, 2005, at 21:07:39

I need to get a grip on life, with out medication.

I have ADHD and bad anxiety, should i just give it a quits?

I gave that a rethought, since im always talking about meds, why dont i just stop everything.

I can overcome my Panic attacks, i worry i have early heart problems....... i'll just get a scan, if its fine, then i dont have to worry.

Good Plan?

Hi,
Just let me add my opinion. I was DX as Bipolar with psychotic features and an anxiety disorder. Well, let me be the first to tell you that this disorder was drug induced but yet I believe the pdcos. I went to see three of them and each had a different DX and one said I don't know what you are but let me put you on heavy hitting anit-psychotics. It just makes my blood boil.

I will admit that I have an anxiety disorder but refuse to take drugs b/c I feel there are ways to imrove anxiety like CBT training, diet and exercise. I feel if you want to stop taking meds and try other methods than you should. But PLEASE don't cold turkey the drugs. Due a slow taper. You can try it but know that w/d can last for months. I am 10 months off the drugs and am still somewhat affected by w/d. I know some people who have protracted w/d after 16 months. Good Luck and believe in yourself that life is going to be ok.

Maybe.

It is probably the goal of everyone here to live happily without relying on treatment with medication. If it is your decision to attempt to do this, I think your plan should include the establishment of criteria that define beforehand what will constitute a success or a failure of your experiment. I think you should work this out with your doctor.

Being medfree is a plan a number of us have tried. Some are successful and some are not.

I agree with Scott, a good plan and working with a doc following you is necessary and vital.

I found the grass was not as green as I assumed it would be and my expectations of how I thought I could function sans meds did not live up, but if you decide that is the route you would like to try, please go cautiously and slowly.

I agree with above Posters. I too, have been trying to stop meds and ended up in the hospital from the anxiety of trying. Your Posts tonight indicate to me that you are experiencing high levels of anxiety and indicision. Take a deep breath and try to rationally deal with the problem. I truly wish I could heed my own advice! Good luck. I'll watch your Posts. Phillipa

Matt - if you stop everything at once you are going to feel so sick it's not funny. You will throw up until you dry heave and you will be so dizzy you won't be able to stand up straight. You will have cold sweats and possibly a seizure. I speak from experience. Meet with your pdoc and develop a schedule to wean yourself off EVERYTHING. You have been trying so many things without stopping other meds that who knows what is causing what in your system.

In the meantime GET YOURSELF A THERAPIST NOW! Learn cognitive behavioural therapy for the anxiety. You are never going to make it through college without it. You will be a basket case. You are a basket now but it's from all the sh*t you have been taking.

So check with your mom's CIGNA plan and start calling therapists as soon as possible. Did you know that you can bring on psychosis with all the messing around you have done with psych meds? If you are prediposed to mental illness, everything you are doing is going to make you psychotic and you will need to be on anti-psychotics for life. Do you understand how serious this is?

If you are not really seeing a PDOC then get one.

Start acting like an adult.

Max,

I can understand your frustration and I certainly respect your experiences, but your tone is unfriendly and unsupportive.

Matt,

What does your doctor say when you ask him or her this question?

I very gradually decreased from my medication and I'm not doing well at all. At the time I went off of medication, I had no anxiety. A little while into the no medication phase, the anxiety hit me like a brick wall. I am going back on medication soon. I can't bear another day like this.

Maybe your situation will be different - though if you have bad anxiety problems, I doubt it. But maybe you need to do this experiment now, if for no other reason than to appreciate your medication again. If so, reduce slowly as the others have suggested.

First, I think Scott's advice to plan this with your pdoc and to decide ahead of time how you measure your sucess is valid.

Also, I second (or perhaps third?) the recommendation that you consider getting a therapist. You might also want to get a copy of "The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook" which has great information and exercises for dealing with anxiety and stress.

Take care and good luck,

gg

Hey Matt

I think that cold turkeying all your meds sounds like a bad idea (although its just the kind of thing I'd do!)

What meds are you actually taking?

You should cut down slowly. Drop one med, or a bunch of dose. OR, find a better med, and maybe even add one. Sounds like you are reved up on stimulant, and don't feel good. Talk a sedative, like zyprexa.
