What is this? (Sleep problem.)

Posted by sdjeff on December 29, 2004, at 20:42:03

Here is an issue. I get to sleep around 1 AM or so. I can't get to sleep any sooner at all. It is very difficult to even get to sleep. When I sleep, I have vivid dreams. I wake up around 9 or 10 in the morning and drift in and out of sleep until late in the afternoon. My sleep is non-restorative, I feel fatigued all day. since I lost my job a couple of months ago, it has gotten progressively worse.

I don't think this is a meds issue, since I have had this problem for years, especially the non-restorative sleep. I'm wondering if this is a part of atypical depression or a separate issue.

I'm pretty sure this is a symptom of depression (not necessarily atypical even), but it can be a meds issue too. If I'm not on the right combo, my sleep is horrible. It feels like I haven't slept at all even if I've slept for 14 hours. Sleep is one of the more helpful "gauges" for me as far as how I'm doing with my illness. Have you talked to your pdoc?

I think you are right. My pdoc says I have a sleep hygeine issue. Next time I think I will talk to him a little more adamantly.

What about setting an alarm and getting up early every morning (8am?) for a week or so?? Makes sense that your sleep wouldn't be restorative if you sleep all day. Human beings weren't meant to sleep the day away. If you are in bed all day and you don't get and exercise and you don't get any sunlight, it makes perfect sense that you won't sleep well and it also is something that contributes to depression.

Also, physical activity is very important and a nice jog would tire you out and give you a good nights sleep.

Trying to put yourself on a regular schedule and getting some exercise are certainly things to try before going the medication route.
